Bananas in Tenerife

The banana is one of the Island’s major agricultural resources, with production figures of 200,000 tons a year. Bananas need good lightening, humidity and sand textures. It proceeds from the plant called platanera and gives a fruit cluster of between 15 and 50 kg. They are left nine months and reach their maximum point of sweetness, flavour and smell when small brown spots appear on its skin.

It is an expensive product because the land has to be prepared and for growing bananas you need an irrigation system, fertilizers and thick walls or greenhouse that protect from the wind.

Until recently up to 70 percent of Spain’s bananas came from Tenerife. Small size of bananas from the Island means that it is almost unsaleable on the European market. The quality of bananas from Tenerife is very good.
