The largest source of income in Tenerife is now tourism. Since Spain’s entry into the European Union in 1985 the number of annual visitors has risen to 4 million. The most significant effects of this rapid growth have been an enlarged job market, settlement of several coastal areas, increased living costs, a steadily increasing demand of water because of the immense tourist infrastructure and increased agriculture activity.
The present situation presents a falling trend in the area of cultivated land. In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife there are some 40,000 ha of farm land.
In Tenerife increasing emphasis has been placed on the export of potatoes, tomatoes, cut flowers and a whole range of exotic fruits. Tobacco and wild range of wine are also produced.
