In the center of the port is found La Candelaria square, where you can see the monument The Triumph of La Candelaria, a fine allegory of the apparition of the Virgin to the Guanches on the beaches of Chimisay. It’s made from marble from Carrara and it’s an early example of Classicism, sculpted in 1788 by the distinguished sculptor Antonio Canova. It’s created of a pyramidal column on which rests a figure of the Virgin, round which are grouped four figures representing the Guanche princes.
You can also visit the Casino de Tenerife, which was constructed in the 18th Century; it houses some mural paintings by the island’s most renowned artists: Nestor de la Torre, Bonin and Aguia.
In the square is also situated La Carta palace, an outstanding piece of the island’s 18th Century architecture. It’s characterized by its rich architectural structure with some elements of Mudejar work and includes the inevitable patio and balconies, typical in Tenerife. It was formerly the seat of the civil government.
