La Laguna was the first town established on the island by the Spanish Conquistador Alonso Fernandez de Lugo. In La Laguna you can admire the cathedral of Los Remedios, which is dominated by a magnificent neoclassic façade, and the interior is pseudo Gothic style. In one of its sacristies the cathedral’s treasures are exhibited, including pieces of wrought silver of great artistic value dating from the 18th Century. The most important in the collection are the figures by Tenerife’s sculptor Fernando Estevez, including the fine image of La Candelaria.
In La Laguna is situated the La Laguna University. What is more it’s a town of a friendly atmosphere, relaxed as it is in the student bars, in the Barrio Nuevo. The town has a cooler climate, which helps contribute to the attractions of living in this amazing, historic place.
In La Laguna you can also find the Museo de Historia de Tenerife, which provides the best opportunity to see an interior of this style in the town.
