In the south of Tenerife you can find tourist markets, where you can buy souvenirs. They take place every Sunday in Los Cristianos, next to the Grandhotel Arona and every Thursday in Las Americas, close to the Torviscas beach.
Those ‘rastro’ markets are open from 9am to 2pm and you can find over 200 exhibitors there. Nearly all the goods exhibited are new. 70.000 visitors come to those markets per week. You can buy there clothes, sport items, sunglasses, African sculptures jewelry.
Most of the Tenerife’s markets attract European hippy artists and African traders, selling a repetitive range of kitsch, beads and home-made jewelry and leather goods. They also sell African drums, tribal artifacts, including ceremonial masks. These items are often illegally exported from Africa. They are often joined by Spanish stallholders, offering clothes, tablecloths, placemats, napkins, bed linen and handkerchiefs. These are not always offered at low prices, but they represent good value. You may also find glazed pottery and crockery, usually beautifully hand-painted.
There are many unusual souvenirs that you can buy in Tenerife. Choose from banana-shaped bottles of banana liqueur, dolls in national costume, items made from palm leaves or banana-leaf baskets.
Small markets are also located in Playa San Juan and Los Abrigos. There are no fixed prices in the market, you can negotiate and always get something cheaper.
When you don’t have time to visit the market, the hippies and African traders often sell their goods in streets and on the beaches.
