Town of Garachico in Tenerife.

In the spring of 1706 a volcanic eruption destroyed this village and formed a peninsula of lava. Some buildings constructed from the black pumice stone are still to be seen.

Worth visiting is the Castillo de San Miguel, with its imposing portal decorated with a coat-of-arms. From the castle’s roof the two rivers of lava can clearly be seen. The small Castillo de San Miguel is situated by the sea and is a good place to relax. There is many restaurants and café bars, which are very attractive.

You should also visit the Church of Santa Ana. On the Plaza de Arriba, beyond Santa Ana attractive former Convento de San Francisco is situated. You can see the patios surrounded by balconies, which are typical feature of the Canarian architecture. The historic Hotel la Quinta Roja in the square is a centre for walking and environmentally friendly outdoor activities.

One of the distinctive symbols of the area is the small rocky islet, Rogue de Garachico.
