Hi to all, My name is Tammy, I have a husband, Alan and 3 children 7, 13, 17 and a big white husky dog, we are currently living in Florida, moved here from the UK 4 years ago, and now ready to move on.... for many reasons.
We are considering Tenerife, I have so many question which need answering, but first I will get as much information from the site as possible, so as not to waist peoples time and ask repeat questions, then I will start posting.
I look forward to chatting and making new friends, and will appreciate any help and information given, it looks like a very friendly site.
Thanks Tammy |

Hi Tammy and welcome to our forum. I wish all readers were as sensible as you! We are ready to help anyone but it does get frustrating to have to answer the same questions repeatedly. Then I get called a 'grumpy old man' Use the stickies and the search facility please, then ask. _________________ .

Hi Lea, and all, well, I didn't expect replies so soon to our introduction, it's nice.
Well before the questions start flying in, I will put you in the picture, and our dilemma may course concern and may make people believe we are silly.
Here we go, as I said we live in Florida, yes... just outside Mickey's gates, we came here after many years of vacations, and believing there was the American dream to be had... well, there is no such dream, the immigration take away the dream as soon as you land, Florida is beautiful, the people are OK, but things are changing, the crime rate, cost of living, the beurocricy, red tape and other issues, mainly the immigration and the visa possess.
So, we have learned lessons and realize what we want out of life, one is a decent climate and two, is to live somewhere where you can't be kicked out... usually for no reason... as it is here.
By the way, we are not in the position of having to leave the States.
So... we decided we wanted to move on, we don't want to go back to the UK.
We have had many vacations over the years, Greece, many different Islands, France, Germany, Tunisia, Yugoslavia, Portugal, USA and many other places.... BUT.... are you ready for this...never to Spain or TENERIFE, so, yes, we are considering moving to a country we have never been to.
But, life is a learning curve, and you find things out about yourself every day, when we left the UK, my husband had been in the entertainment business for many years, 23 to be exact, from leaving school he stayed in he business until 4 years ago, but as with any job, he became tired of it, (or thought he had), and got to the point of hating it, and I was also frustrated that I and our children only saw him a few days a month, because he was working constantly throughout Europe, we also we owned a busy Entertainment agency.
So, one day, he just said (out of the blue) he wanted a quieter life and wanted to spend more time with our children, and thought it would be nice to move and have a more family oriented lifestyle... we decided on Florida.
We came over purchased a good business, which has prospered and gives a good lifestyle, but now he, and I suppose myself have realized, that we miss the livelier lifestyle, no not night clubbing, but general socializing.
Socializing where we live and in fact all of Florida is hard, firstly if you want to go to a bar, you have to get a cab because everything is so spread out, there is no walking to the local, in the bars is just as bad, the main conversation in the Britt bars is the Visa/immigration situation, friends leaving, getting kicked out, having there visa denied and so forth, so, basically we tend to stay away from the Britt bars full stop, because it's all doom and gloom and sad.
We do have a lot of American friends, but there is a difference in the American and Britt humor and the way we think, not a bad difference... just different.
It's hard to go out mid-week because the schools start so early, you have to be back at 9/10 o'clock, our eldest has to get up at 5 am, to catch the school bus at 6.15, our youngest, was catching the school bus at 6.20, we now get up at 6 and take her.
So, in a nut shell, we know there is a better lifestyle out there, we want the climate, and hopefully to live in a community where we don't have to drive 20 minutes to chat with friends, these are the only two things we want.
This reply may not make a lot of sense, and it is hard for me to explain.
It will become more understandable as we post, the list of reasons we want to leave Florida is large, not winging reasons, but reasons most of you will agree with.
I understand this forum is not about Florida, so hopefully this first posting will give an insight to why we will be asking questions.
Thanks for the friendly welcomes.
Tammy

Wow, well Tenerife definately has the climate and depending where you live there are loads of opportunities to socialise etc I go to Tenerife regular and for example in December when we visited we had 2 forum meets which were great and spent most days with friends, in which we met many new people and had good times with..... that is the way the island is, when we moved there in 2004 in took a matter of days to have a social circle, many of which are still friends !
Anyway, we wish you all the luck in the world. Tenerife is a great place to live but you will need to take into account what you will do for work, although I have never been to florida I anticipate it is not easy to set up business as it is over there, with the language barrier etc
Anyway good luck , we look forward to hearing all your stories !!

Hi, lea and Chris, thanks for the kind words, believe me, starting a business in Florida is unbelievably hard, loads of 100's of registrations, 100's of Tax forms, 100000's of licence's, you need a licence for everything, if you fart, you need a licence first.
With regard friends, don't get me wrong, we have a large circle of close friends, but we all live miles apart, as I said, everything is so spread out over here, there are hundreds of restaurants, but only a handful of bars, we live within 4 miles of Disney, and on the main road where we live (14 miles long), there is not one bar, the main road to Disney from us... around 10 miles, there are only 5 bars, so as you can see, it's a long drive to go for a beer or to socialize. Our so called local is 11 mile away.
You are probably thinking we are alcoholics, were not, we manage one night a week, and we do eat out about twice week.
Yes, the climate, well it's really cold today, but nice... summer doe's get very humid... not burning hot, wet hot, so it's nice when the winter comes, today is below normal, I think it's normally about the same here as it is in Tenerife.
Well, I shall carry on reading the Tenerife threads, see what I can learn, the biggest thing I have learned is that people seem chilled out, doesn't seem to be much negativity, not the same as the Florida forums.
So, again, thank you for the warm welcome.

Hi Stripps, this is Alan, Tammy's husband.... I feel better already, you see, this is what we miss, as you have probably realized already, we have a good sense of humor, firstly our spelling has gone American, and secondly, we are a family from Florida who have joined your forum, and who want to move to a country where they have never been to before, live somewhere where they have never seen, buy a business in a town they have never set foot in, send the kids to school in a town or a village that they probably won't be able to prenounce, so as you can see, we have a sence of humor.
Alan

Hi margaretbl, yes it's our doggy, he is a Samoyed Husky... big and fury, one big white ball of fluff.
He want's to live in Tenerife too, I have told him to start his own thread, and get advice off other ex-patdoggys.
