Hi all, hope you are ready, for us to start popping questions. I will try to keep them short and sweet.
Our youngest Daughter, has Disability's. She needs to see a Doctor twice a year, as she has Spina-Bifida, Scoliocis, and Developmental delays. These conditions are not server, just need to keep a check on her now and again.
In Florida, it's private health care, and will not Insure persons, with a pre existing condition. Would we have the same problem in Tenerife ?
My second Question is, does the school's have a good special needs program, for kids like her ?
Thanks Tammy.
PS. Sorry about the spelling, you will get use to it. Wink

Some spanish schools have special facilities for children with special needs.. I know theres one in El Medano.

You would need to have a look around in the area you want to live....OR live in the area that has the schools with the ability to help your child.

I know that some schools put on extra lessons and extra help for children that learn at a slower pace....Our school put on extra FREE spanish lessons so that children can adapt easier and quicker.

The health systyem over here is different than in UK....You can have Private medical insurance ...this is handy when you first arrive as you will have a job that pays for you social care. Once you have a job with a CONTRACT, then the social payments should commence and you will get the benefit of the social care system.

You would have to check with the Insurance companies here if they will cover your daughters special needs.

BUT if you work and pay local taxes and social then you may get the checks and so forth done on the health system free....BUT chek it out first...

The insurance companies will not cover existing conditions. Your only hope is to get into the Spanish system either through self employment or through full employment.

Thanks for the info guys. Would you say the Spanish NHS, is as good as our's in the UK ? Confused
We have said, if we have too, we would just fly back to the UK, to have her seen, as it's only twice a year.
Thanks again Tammy

In my opinion and experience....it is actually beter here than UK..lol

I have had to go in with my son for an emergency and they were fantastic. I also had to go in with my husband when he sliced his hand open lol....and they were very good then too.

My friend has had a lot of experience with her son wno was in hospital for 8 months.......and she said they were excellent and could not praise them enough.

I have had a child in the south hospital which I don't recommend (it is private but until the public hospital gets finished it also deals with social patients). I also had an operation for an ectopic pregnancy several years ago in the north and the staff and services were excellent. Of course, it is easier again if you speak Spanish as many Doctors will refuse to speak English and ask you to take a translator. If you have private insurance, the south hospital have their own translators.

A friend of mine has Crohn's disease and had an operation in the north. She then went on to have two children by Cesarean and the hospital had her digestive surgeon on standby should anything go wrong - thankfully it didn't.

Thanks for the replies. Here in Florida you have to pay between $50.00 and $85.00, before the Doctor even sees you.
I think we all, will be in need of a doctors visit, once we move from here. Four years of wrapping the kids up in cotton wool, so they don't have a accident. Doctors bills are so high. It's cost $15.000 if you brake a leg, over here.
One of the many reasons we want to sell up, and move on.
Thank's again Tammy

Thats a lot of money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friend pays out for private insurance and the payments are around 140€ a month for her family...2 adults and 1 child.

BUT if you dont have insurance or social the you will be billed....they will still treat you but will charge. Someone I used to work with got charged a fortune because they had ambulances, medical treatment and so forth. They were charged for every different person they saw and literally down the pills they were given.

Get some sort of insurance or pay the social costs....definitely worth it.

Strips,

That price is not too bad, do you know if that covers everything...... I mean dental, doctors, hospital visits etc and is there a set limit to what you can claim in a year..... ( not that anyone wants to have to use this but you do have to think about and cover for ALL eventualities dont you ?? )

Dental.....lol NO

Dental cover overe here IMHO is not worth the paper it is written on.

Dental care is all private...if you are on the social you get a slight dicount...but thats about it.

You can get seperate dental ..but still not that great...

As far as I know everyone has to pay for dental.

You get discounts with the social....but I know people who have paid private insurance for dental then still had to pay the cost of treatments because it only covered their initial test.

Check it out though .....BUT some companies will mislead you ...just so you take their cover.

On the Social Security anyone can have a check up and teeth pulled. Nothing else is covered.

With private, each company is different. Like Stripps says, check before taking out insurance.
