| My father is suffering from Seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Doctor has suggested him to undergo light box therapy. Could anyone tell me what is this SAD? How effective the light rays are in the treatment of SAD? |

| S.A.D. is an acronym for “Seasonal Affective Disorder” more generally known as the “Winter Blues”. It is a specific type of major depression, one which reoccurs at specific times of the year. It occurs mainly during winter due to less exposure to light. Light plays a major role in our well-being, as does the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. Light box therapy is quite effective in treatment of SAD. The light rays activate pineal gland which secrets serotonin and control melatonin. Melatonin is hormone which helps us to sleep on the other hand serotonin regulates our mood and energy. Thus light rays rejuvenate our mind and effective in treatment of SAD. |
