Post subject: Good afternoon and HI.... |
|
|
I will apologise in advance, for War and Peace, im sure i will become a little bit of a pain in the rectum, over the next few months,as i seek advice, i along with my wife are seriously considering a move to the Island, we first visited 11 years ago and for the next few years were over there around five times a year, our holidays to Tenerife over recent years have been fewer and far between, however we have just returned from a trip and are seriously depressed about being back in the rat race, We first discussed moving over about 9 years ago, however my wife had cold feet(i told her the Tenerife climate would soon warm them), What can we offer i hear the cry, thats the first stumbling block i suppose, as two English speaking people who work hard but within the Rail industry, poses problems with regards to work, my dream has always been to run a Karaoke bar(heard that one before hav'nt you), i have worked behind many bars previously and always loved it, i would combine it with another pastime, entertaining, i have as a solo artist sung around the pubs and clubs of UK. My wife has a real passion for cooking so would take care of that side of a business, as two very bubbly, fun personalities who are not afraid of hard work i reckon we would make a real good go of it, food by day entertainment by night. Now my ignorance kicks in, how does the buying/renting/bills work, are there hidden costs etc, similar to UK i would imagine but are there any laws etc i should be aware of? Thanks in advance of both help and hopefuly friendship. _________________ Never say never. |

Hello take on board all that you are told on here be it positive or negative, especially from those who live on the island, they are living the dream.
I wish you good luck in your search. _________________ Failures don't plan to fail, they fail to plan

Hi and welcome to the forum
theres loads of useful things on here...if you have any questions then feel free to ask....even silly ones..lol
We get used to it on here...we all are rather daft at times..heehee
Theres info and advise on buying bars and different types of work. It is very different running a bar instead of just working in one. Have a read through and see what you think.
Take care _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

My first thought is.....Oh dear, not another bar dreamer. If you use the search you'll find hundreds of posts on the subject. Generally most bars that are bought by people who haven't owned a bar before are up for sale again in 3 months. Of course ALL those people swore blind that it wouldn't happen to them!
If you want to get out of the rat race why do you want to work 16 hour days in Tenerife?
Your wife loves cooking..... in a tiny HOT kitchen? It's very different to cooking at home for an appreciative audience.
Over 90% of first time businesses in Tenerife FAIL!
Take a look at bars for sale (Tenerife property above) and spend HALF your available capital on buying, keep the rest for start up/marketing costs.
Talk to my accountant BEFORE committing to anything (FOC for the first consultation).
The one plus point I see for you (if you've got this far) is that you can provide your own entertainment but don't forget that you'll have to pay bar staff while you're entertaining.
Now use the search facility at the top of the page and digest all info.
If you still want to do it, GOOD LUCK to you.
I'm not a dream spoiler but a realist and successful businessman who's had his fair share of problems in 21 years on the Island.
PS When did you start to learn to speak Spanish? Dare I guess that you haven't? _________________ .

Many thanks all, paticularly yourself Rob, because i also am a realist these are all the responses i expected, i started to learn Spanish in October, i will want to be of a certain standard before i enter into any business, i appreciate the need to relate to relevent persons etc, We have given ourselves one year before making the final decision, we plan on numerous trips accross to get more of an idea and feel for things, i appreciate all the comments and i knew there would be a reaction of here we go again, bar owner, with your experiences im sure you have seen so many more failures than successes, so what makes me any different.. At this stage nothing, each and every other failure would have had the same belief that they could make it work, again hence why i intend to get as much prior knowledge as possible before commiting to anything. _________________ Never say never. |

Maybe, just maybe....we'll have a survivor here.
Try this...http://www.sun4free.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=60251#60251
Why not come and live and work in a bar before buying. You can always work 'normal' hours for someone else and volunteer to do free work in order to find out what it's really like. Personally I would work for others as a bar person/cook and also as an entertainer in your position and keep my money in my pocket till I had a true idea of what it's like.
Serious question. Why don't you own a pub in England? _________________ .

All the above is something we have given considerable consideration to, to the extent that we have spoken to our managers at work with regards to a 6 month sebaticle whilst we do this, then as you say it would keep our money in my pocket until we knew one way or another, that was another option, owning or working for others, what is more of a certainty is that we will make the move, we were just thoughtful of what would be most profitable in the long run. The honest answer to why i have not or do not own a bar here is down to one or two reasons, the big gonna word but also we were wanting children, didnt necessarily think it was the right environment for them(no offence to publicans), moral of the story we cannot have children, numerous failed IVF attempts. So now look into the possibilities again at home and in Tenerife. _________________ Never say never. |

Hi KD4, my very first thought was had you bought somewhere 11 years ago you would be laughing all the way to the bank today.
