Bermuda Buttercup (Oxalis pes-caprae) is actually from South Africa but has spread around the world to many countries where it is regarded as a very invasive weed. So too in Tenerife where its bright yellow flowers fill patches of recently disturbed ground as well as popping up in lawns, on farmed land and on roadsides. Bermuda Buttercup looks very pretty and makes large patches of colour but it is a nightmare to get rid of because it spreads by pieces of the root and little bulbs. Bermuda Buttercup has colonised the UK too and is spreading in bulbfields in Devon and other parts of the country.

The leaves are very sour and tangy because of the oxalic acid in them. They can be added to salads but are not suitable for people with arthritis and gout.
