Hi everyone just wanted to let anyone who uses e bay know what could potentialy happen to them!!
Last week we got an e mail thanking us for changing our e bay password, shiel read the e mail assumed I had wanted to buy something and couldnt remember the password, so changed the password, which I didnt! anyway we changed it back thinking it was an error and thought no more of it. BIG MISTAKE!!
Saturday - pc turned off (unusual for us it is always on for e mails for our agents etc, so we notice them right away), but we were out cutting the grass, staining the decking, and eventually came in for a break at 4pm, Shiel turned his lap top on and had about 10 e mails from e bay telling us we had "won" various items we were biding on!! we were not bidding on anything! we logged on to e bay only to find we could not access our account as someone had changed our password again! we managed to change our password, then we recieve another e mail, so we logged out of e bay to read it, it was thanking us for paying for our item - $123 for a handbag.
back to e bay password had been changed again!!! stressed out by this time.
phoned the bank , sure enough I was paying for a handbag I had not bought. not only that but another transaction for $119 was going to come off on sunday.Cancelled all my bank cards!!, but couldnt cancel transactions - not a happy camper!
back to e bay yip I had "won" a $119 handbag aswell.
phoned the police who told me to bring my laptop down - waste of time all the officers were out at domestics!
Police came on Sunday took a statement and when they looked at my e bay account I had won yet another two bags $141 each!! - They wont get the money cause my cards are cancelled - police lookng into it, as fraud and I may get the money back from the bank at some point.
Sorry for going on just wanted to warn you what is going with e bay, and pay pal is supposed to be a secure sight!!

we get all those emails all the time....PHISING website use these....my nortons Picks these up all the time.

Ebay does say only change your password from the home page on their atucal site.

Lots of people have been conned like this, as with bank sites too...people receive these emails and believe them to be true...they are not.

They should not have been able to access your paypal account unless you had the same password and they had pot luck...

You have to be careful....we use Ebay all the time...and I never never never listen to any emails like that at all....I get them for banks that I dont even Use..lol norton deletes it for me ..

Hi Guys, I think my e bay post may be bit confusing, I was typing in a rush, while skiving off the gardening!!
The e mail was from e bay- and we logged into my account and the password had been changed by someone! ( That was about 10 days ago).
Really we shoud have looked into it then because it meant someone had managed to log on as us and change it. but they hadnt bought anything at that point. If we had notified e bay it could have been sorted before they bought anything.
The police believe they have hacked into my computer using a software that Private detectives use, which allows you to see everything someone is doing on line, that is why everytime, we changed the password on e bay they were able to change it to something else, and block us from logging in. They were watching us typing it in!!
The police also think it is a double scam because if I am paying for something with pay pal then my address is registered as the delivery address, so there would be no point using my card as they wouldnt recieve the goods, I would - therefore the police think the person using my pay pal has set up the seller page (bogus), there are no handbags, it is his listing and the money from me is going to his paypal account in America - and no bags are being sent out.
Forgot to mention initially I am also paying his e bay seller fees from my switch card??!!
It all seems very complicated to me but if you recieve an e mail thanking you for changing your password and you have not changed it then you need to contact e bay right away, although that in itself is difficult as you cant phone them.
I must admit though I have used e bay "a lot" in the last five years and it is the first problem I have had - Shiel says I shouldnt use it anymore....boo hoo ....i'll miss all the bargains, but hey it'll be more money in the Tenerife kitty, and less "clutter" to get rid of at the car booty next year!!...lol
Anyway as I said if you are "careful " and not "carefree" like me then you should e ok

Are you running up to date anti-virus / firewall / anti-spyware?

Sounds like it was probably a key-logger they used to get your password...this nifty piece of software will capture every keystroke (including passwords in plain text) and has probably been set to e-mail the files of keystrokes to the 'fraudster'. But should have been picked up by your normal precautions (see above)

The key logger doesn't need the 'fraudster' to sit watching your screen all day to wait for you to change a password he just gets the new passwords e-mailed to him

If the police did a thorough search of your laptop they would be able to find the software easily (for them) although it may have been totally invisible to the end user.

my mums always taught me not to use card details etc if theres no padlock at bottom of page or whatever the symbol is to say its an approved secure site

I've been using e-bay/paypal since the day Barclays decided to give me a debit card and what funky said is pretty much spot on.

Quite frankly, I don't think the police really have an idea what their talking about.

If you think you have been scammed, etc open a dispute claim with Paypal, they are really good and haven't failed me once.

Hi guys and thanks for all your input. I followed Funkys advice and checked the first e mail (I had printed them out to give to the police). It actually did have our e bay user name on it i.e dear------, and not dear e bay user. However I have now recieved an e mail from the seller of the bags saying not to pay him, because his paypal account has been stolen.
I recieved this e mail after the payment had been taken from my bank a/c! So the police theory seems to be wrong.
Your definatley right about the police Funky - they dont have a clue, they just dont know how this has happened or how to deal with this. They said because my bank card has not been stolen, they dont know the procedure for looking in to it!!
I am always very carefull and as Leeane says I only use secure sights, and ironicaly preferrably paypal.

I have used eBay & Paypal since it first came on the scene and have always been wary of emails from either requesting account information.....

The only advice I can give is to ensure you NEVER click on a link in any email, always open a new browser window and type in the webpage.

Also consider using a password manager, I use for example Webreplay (free for 10 stored logins)

I also make sure that I generate at least a 30 character password from within the software and apply that to ebay, with another for paypal etc etc

The good thing with this piece of kit is you do not have to remember the password (not that you would) all you need to remember is a one master password to access the software on your PC
