Between El Tanque and Ruigomez in the north is a camel centre and although I've not been in I got some pics from outside. Visitors dress up as Arabs and have rides and there's a restaurant and shop there too.

I don't know, Sara, having never been in there. They look OK to me but I am no expert on camels.

Well, its not ideal and hardly natural conditions and I am sure those saddles get left on them most of the day. Usually when I go past on the bus I can see groups of the camels sitting down in the yard. They don't get to do much until people arrive and pay for rides and then they walk around the grounds.
I really don't know much about camels though and couldn't even tell you where this type comes from or how they are doing in the wild. So I am about to search and see what I can find out.
Of course if people didn't pay for rides and photos on camels dressed up in Arab robes this sort of thing couldn't go on! I have seen another camel centre down south too.

..well, it's not for me, but i know plenty of people who have had a ride on them...they do look uncomfortable with those seats on...let us know what you find out bard please.  |

Poor things, we stopped there for a break on a coach trip, the animals looked fine, but there again I ain't no Camel expert.

I found out amongst other things that camels can live to be as much as 60-80 years old and that the majority of that type of camel - the dromedary - are in captivity and domesticated and far worse fates are in store for many because they are butchered for meat in many places. I also found that a very large feral colony of 700,000 are living in Australia, of all places, and that they are being or have been culled!
The two-humped Bactrian lives more in the wild but its numbers are getting less.
Some facts:
"The almost 14 million dromedaries alive today are domesticated animals (mostly living in Somalia, Sudan, Mauritania and nearby countries).
The Bactrian camel is now reduced to an estimated 1.4 million animals, mostly domesticated. It is thought that there are about 1000 wild Bactrian camels in the Gobi Desert in China and Mongolia."

found this, in the UAE they have a beauty contest for camels with big big prizes, I can't find the first one I read with the list of prizes just this one.

HI Bard,
There another Camel park ( if thats what its called ) in the south as you say, think its the one Iv passed by often next to the refuse centre ( where all the rubbish or garbage vans are kept ) on the main road towards Callao Salvaje and Paraiso, I went past last week when I was over on the bus, looks kinda similar, camels outside and a gift shop and cafe, these camels never had the saddles on though, and Iv never ever seen anyone anywhere near this and iv passed by a lot of times on my various visits to Callao.
maybe Karlb will know a bit more about it as he lives in callao and will probably drive past this daily.

Yes, I've seen that one too and I think they have donkeys as well. It's more like camel country there!

cant say iv ever noticed the donkeys there before, I do notice the place never seems to have any sign of life though, dont think iv ever seem anyone on the camels, and to be honest it doesnt appeal to me or my kids therefore we'v never visited when we've been over. I dont know how it is still there and open, I mean I often wonder how do these places survive.
now if it was stables with horses Id deffinatly visit, do you know if there is any horse riding around the south ???

Yes, there are horses and stables all over the island. In the south there's La Caldera del Rey.
The camel centre up here often has people there and groups of them dressed as Arabs up on the camels. I never see anyone at the Callao park though and been passed it loads of times on the bus.

A camel rescue centre? You mean there are camels that need saving here?
I think it's supposed to act like the one up here and you pay for entrance and rides and buy something to eat and drink in the cafe and some merchandise to take away - well that's the impression I got!
