Post subject: The Taxi Drivers are at it again !! |
|
|
I just read in the paper that the Taxi Drivers are 'up in arms' again (not sure how they can physically drive, as their arms seem to be permanently 'up'??)
It was not enough that they were demanding that the govermnent pay their pension contributions in compensation for having had the audacity to introduce a Tram System in Santa Cruz. It wasn't even enough to just bully Granadilla Council into scrapping the pick up/drop off bays for friends and family picking up at the airport. I am also convinced they lobbied for the current myriad of one-way systems around Los Cris and PDLA (as the only people the routes seem to benefit are those who like to go the long way round town just as slowly as possible).
But none of that was enough. Now they are objecting to the introduction of a new Airport - Los Cris/Las Americas/Adeje shuttle bus. This bus has been long overdue in coming. Almost every other resort airport in the world provides a proper dedicated tourist transport link to major resorts (including for instance in Gran Canaria). The cost is dearer than the regular bus (€5,00) but a damn sight cheaper than a €25,00 - €30,00 Taxi.
Apparently the taxi drivers say it will mean less work for them. Er, that's the whole idea, you overpaid muppets! Its called 'consumer choice', which is introduced to replace monopolistic thievery. The bad news...... guess what type of tricks and tactics are likely to increase as the drivers try to make up the shortfall?
Tenerife must be one of the few places on the world where certain public sector or public service workers think the world owes them a living. In almost every walk of life, jobs are being lost to technological or logistical improvements in transport or communications technology. That's life! Sadly, the taxi drivers on this island will not rest until a law is passed making it illegal to leave an airport or walk out of your hotel door without taking a compulsory ride in an overpriced white car.
I for one have already started to 'talk with my feet'. Now I never take a taxi unless I have to. I watch their route and the meter extras like a hawk. I will get them to drop me off at the bottom of the road and walk the rest. If everyone followed suit, hopefully the 'taxistas' would soon learn that getting paid enough to drive around in a new Merc and to lounge around half the day parked up chatting with your mates is a privilege, not a right. _________________ My Paranoia-Management Therapy is going great! heehee.....I read about this in the newspaper... I think it is funny.
Like you say they are sooooooooooooo over paid and take for granted that people HAVE to get taxis. I for one would still rather get a taxi....its easier with 3 children and luggage. But many people will use the bus and find it suits them better. GOOD FOR THEM...bad for taxis...never mind. _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Maybe you should hunt down the first driver and demand a €10 refund
I'm sure they make it up as they go along. I've had the same wildly differing figures for almost identical journeys in identical levels of traffic, with no supplements on either fare. It also wouldn't surprise me if some drivers have found a way to rig the meter without getting caught. I've heard that some black cabbies even do it in London and they get spot checked etc. _________________ My Paranoia-Management Therapy is going great! DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON TAXI DRIVERS.
Here is a copy of a post I did a while ago............
The other night our bus stopped in Playa Pariso and because we were tired wanted to get a taxi to the next village on the front, Callao Salvaje, where we live.
We got in the taxi and explained where we wanted to go.
Now for anyone that knows there is a shortcut from Pariso to Callao which cuts out about 2 or 3 miles. Especially where we live its just where the short cut comes out in Callao. As the taxi man tried to whizz past the shortcut we said no here, turn left the shortcut, after 5 mins of him trying to explain he could not go that way we said we would get out and not pay as he had not taken us to our destination. My wife was out the taxi and I was about to get out.
ok ok ok the taxi man said I will take you.........there was our mistake as soon as we got in he closed the doors and took us straight back to where we had got in in the first place. He then proceeded to run along the taxi rank to tell all his 'mates' not to take us.
We then walked home with our 4 year old.
The moral, never trust a tenerife taxi driver, EVER.
Do taxi drivers have the complaint book that every other business has to produce by law??????

I use Via Express from the airport, very reasonable for 7 of us it was 58 euro return Airport to Las Americas.
I think the shuttle bus is a good idea, we have found a marked difference in fares, San Eugeino to market in Fanabe, we needed two taxis taxi one 7.50 taxi 2 9.00 both taxis followed each other as Nathan was waving out the back to his uncle David. we always walk back as it is down hill _________________ Failures don't plan to fail, they fail to plan

Yet more evidence that some of the meters are rigged (or at least not properly calibrated).
The only other reason for such differences would be if the meters were somehow geared to different sizes or fuel economies of each particular taxi. However, if that was the case, surely everyone would know by now and simply head straight for the only Skoda Diesel cab in the line. _________________ My Paranoia-Management Therapy is going great! I am sure that every company/self-employed person must have a complaints form that you can fill in.
Did you get the taxi's number? _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17

I can agree with all of these comments, Margaret, I have also been in a situation where iv used 2 taxis one following the other and at the destination the fares have been different...... next time Im not gonna pay till I ask the my friends in the other cab how much they paid then challenge both drivers and see what they have to say..... at this point if there is not satisfactory result I will ask for a complaints form and get there numbers, Im sick being ripped off !!!!
Jenny, unfortunatly I did not get the drivers number but I will NEXT time.....
Karlb, Yep I know the short cut I assume through the banana plantation, you are referring to....... _________________ not long till summer........ yepeeeeeeeee |

Oh for gods sake, I love Tenerife, but it doesnt half annoy me at times!!
The taxi drivers do my head in and I must admit if on a rare occasion I am forced to use one, I do the "stop short of my destination and walk the rest". In fact, Im happy that, within reason, once I get to the town I am travelling to, Im happy to get out and walk the rest.
HA!
Buut a shuttle bus would be brilliant, I cant believe Im excited about something so simple and normal as that, everywhere else has them! _________________ www.waggytailspetcare.com
