Post subject: Health care advice please? |
|
|
Hi guys, I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know if there is a paediatric rheumatoligist on the island, as we would need one for Cora.
Her consultant here says the level of care will not be as good, as the Spanish health service is not as good as the NHS !...Sorry but I have had bad experiences with the NHS.
I have done a search for Paed. Rheum. on the net but couldn't find any concrete information.
If anyone has any ideas who I could contact that would be able to advise me then it would be much appreciated.
Cheers all

I know that the doctors over here for children are paediatric trained, not necessarily rhuematoligist.
jenny may know more on that side of things...
BUT as for the doctor saying the health is better in the UK...well that depends...the waiting times here are better and I have found that the care is definitely better when dealing with my children in doctors surgeries and hospitals...
I think you get good and bad where ever you go... _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Thanks Stripps, she could always see an adult rheumatolagist, she was supposed to here actually, as the hospital (Yorkill sick kids) didn't realise that they had a consultant who could treat her. It took a letter from my local MP for them to discover that they had an expert on their staff who could treat Cora!! (and she is an excellent doctor and really lovely).

Had a look on the net and found that there was a National Conference of Pediatric Rheumatology in Santa Cruz in November last year so there must be Doctors here.
Can't find anything specific about children's rheumatology within the public health service but like you say, if not pediatricians then at least adult specialists. I have found that there is a specialist department in the Candelaria Hospital in Santa Cruz.
I feel that health facilities, treatment at the public hospital in Santa Cruz and dealings with Doctors here to be adequate. I wouldn't say it's first class but then I don't suppose any public health service is!
(Btw for future reference, you'd need to search in Spanish on google.es if hoping to find this sort of information - you would be looking for reumatología pediatrica tenerife (if you don't add Tenerife you'd get results from all over the Spanish speaking world!))

Oh Jenny, thank you so much for finding all that out for me! You are a saint!!
It's reaussuring to know that there are specialists there, Although I will obviously need to research thoroughly, before we are there permananently.
She had an apointment yesterday and burst out crying when we came out of the hospital.......she thought we wouldn't be able to come because of what the doctor said about the health care!!
Is Candelaria a public hospital then?

Candelaria hospital is up the north in Santa Cruz....it is the National Health Service Hospital for social paying people...as apposed to Private down here in Las Americas..
My friends little boy had to spend months in there with Lukemia (sp)..and she found the hospital support great.
You should be able to get Cora treated here, even by the adult doctors...tell her not to worry bless her..
My youngest thinks the doctors here are fab lol...he is only 5 bless him and has had to have his head sown up by them lol...bit accident prone my boy.. _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Aaw I hope his wee head is ok now, Cora split her head open when she was five too, it must be that age!
The hospital sounds great!

I remembered to ask!! My son's pediatrician tells me that there is a Rheumatology specialist in El Mojon (south) but he only deals with adults and the one your daughter would need to see is in Santa Cruz (this is a normal Rheumatology specialist but he also deals with children). _________________ Who am I?
