I try to use tap water as little as possible and guess that, to avoid all toxins, I will have to wait until I get my little organic farm and only eat my own / others' organic produce.

Do you know if the tap water all over the island is contaminated?

I can't say for certain but when the scandal of the admitted over-fluoridated water was in the press I seem to remember seeing a list of towns and areas here which were within safe limits and the others that were not. I think the whole island has fluoride now. It's best to check though - don't take my word for it.

If you are going to grow your own crops if possible don't use the domestic water supply otherwise the so-called organically-grown plants are still going to be exposed to the problem.

On most fincas we have seen there is either the water tank or a water supply for farmers. Do you think these will not be contaminated then?

I am not certain about where the water comes from that goes in these reservoir tanks. I know the ones around here get pumped around and go up and down. If the water is from underground it should be better than tapwater but so much pesticide, herbicide and fungicide is used on this island it is hard to say what is in the water seeing as all these chemicals most go somewhere and water follows the law of gravity and carries with it any pollution it encounters unless this gets filtered out or broken down.

I have noted that the aquatic life here is limited to creatures that can withstand terrible water conditions. Dragonflies, damselflies and mosquito fish all do fine in water full of algae and in Las Galletas it is very salty and gets hot. It looks as if it got too hot and salty for a species of Toad Rush which has died off a lot there. I have also seen Whirligig beetles in brackish water here and dragonflies. I often wonder where all the sulphur goes that gets put all over the grape vines.

There is a reservoir down from Chafiras above the golf area that stinks badly and clearly has detergent in it because you can see the froth. I saw a pair of Egrets there so I assumed they were after mosquito fish.

There is a stream in the water gardens in Parque Taoro in Puerto that is also full of detergent and you can see where plants along the water's edge have turned brown and died. It's a shame because it spoils a lovely park.

The agricultural water that you see in farmers tanks is pumped straight out of the mountain and is not treated, it's usually purer than tap water.

The tank that you speak of at Las Chafiras is a holding tank for Amarilla Golf it holds semi treated sewage water piped down from Santa Cruz. I often see egrets there so they must find something to feed on!

Perhaps I should have said that it's a holding tank for Amarilla Golf COURSE. Not I hasten to add for the purpose of providing drinking water!

Thanks for the clarification Rob. Maybe I should have thought a little before posting (then it may have well been obvious to me) but my first thought was YUK

So where does the water come from to water the GDS golf Course, have they got a holding tank of their own do you know or maybe share the one at Las Chafiras?

Well this is certainly a wake up call.

We have a Brita filter that attaches onto our tap in the kitchen but the filter needs replacing every so often and I have lost the agents number.

We have been using a lot more bottled water no due to this thread, we used to boil veg etc in tap water but know I am seriously looking at using bottled.

There are a few ads around in the locals about make your water safe but does anyone use any filter system at the moment?

Rob I know you said 'One of these days I will get round to fitting a 'reverse osmosis' water filter into my kitchen. ' Is this an expensive system, any idea of cost and does it work?

I bought a reverse osmosis system from Hydraulica in Adeje 195 E, you can get the same thing 5 E dearer in Leroy Merlin, it works very well, you'll still need to replace the filters periodically but it still works out cheaper plus there's no heavy bottles to lug around. Fitting is simple, any DIY person should manage it.

Thanks, it is something I am seriously considering.

Sorry another question, I take it this is for under the kitchen sink. Is it possible to fit it to the water coming into the house. ie So all the water is filtered. Obviously this will be a hell of a lot more expensive in filters but I would prefer to know what options are available.

Yes you can fit filters to the water supply for the whole house, not reverse osmosis but a 3 stage filter system will cut out a lot of the rubbish. I have seen them in Las Chafiras.
