And tonight is also San Juan festival. Many beaches (and other areas) will be packed, fires burnt and fireworks lit to celebrate the beginning of the summer.
If you see people jumping over small fires, don't worry! The tradition is for them to jump three times over a fire and they will be purified and all their problems burnt away. _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17
I will make this day a happy one for I alone can determine what kind of day it will be. |

And every year there are hospital cases of people being treated for burns due to falling in the fires while drunk! _________________ .

Ha Ha, could burn away more than their problems!
Is the San Juan festival the one I have read about, where they take the goats to paddle in the sea to help with their fertility?

You're quite correct Maryj. It's celebrated in Puerto de la Cruz in particular on Midsummers morning. El baño de las cabras”, the bathing of the goats, is one of the highlights of one of the Canary Islands’ oldest celebrations, the ‘fiestas de San Juan’ or, to give it its more ancient title, the Fiestas of the Sun. Its believed that its origins lie with the Island’s aboriginal people, the Guanche who, like many primitive civilisations, believed that the sun cast powerful magic when it was at its midsummer peak. _________________ .

Thanks for the information Rob.
I obviously mistook 'fiestas de San Juan' to mean it was held in Playa de San Juan. (More education for me!) _________________ Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional. |

Yes, thanks and I've just posted my report in the Carnaval and Fiestas forum. I am going to be doing more of this in future.
I forgot to add that I was woken at 5 am on Sunday by the people above me having a very loud party with dance music at full volume. The cats could sleep through it but I couldn`t! _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |
