You have reminded me I need to change that. It was a joke between me and Leanne (member name Chris_and_Leanne, who is a Reiki practioner and holistic therapist, still living in UK at present). I can't for the life of me think what it was about now!! I have even made a search and can't come up with anything - must be the baby eating my brain cells!!
Anyway Leanne has not been on much recently as she's had problems with her computer cables!! We hope she will get them sorted soon. _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17

I like your tag line,
I will make this day a happy one...
Notice in your profile:
Moved to Galicia (northern Spain) for 1 year
We had good friends in Galicia. They were a mother and her grown daughter, from the U.K. and living in Spain. We met them in Andalusia.
Then the daughter met a man (on El Camino) and they married and moved to Galicia.
It sounded like beautiful countryside from their emails. But as most places, surviving is an issue. There is a place for making a day happy and a place for knowing when to move on (but still be happy!)
Good philosophy. |

It is beautiful in Galicia - I am going to a christening there next week. My husband is from A Coruña and all his family still live there. We bought an old house in the middle of a picturesque valley and wanted to renovate it and start up a small guest house but we decided it would have cost us too much money (which we didn't have!) and taken far too long so we opted to come back to Tenerife.
You will find a lot of Galician's all over the place (I guess many move to try to find work). There is a joke in Spain that goes "When Neil Armstrong got to the moon, he found that there was a Galician already there!"
My sig is from one of Karlb's grandmother's sayings (see General Chit Chat). _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17

Back on topic again, I just realised I never replied to this post.
Sorry to hear that you didn't find your feet here Claire. Perhaps the best way to look on it was as a fun holiday. You got to go out almost every night eating and drinking, you made 50 friends and you now have a lot more life experience. Best of all, you can save up and try again, hopefully next time avoiding any mistakes you made before.
Regarding the work situation (and putting aside Rob's offer for the moment) I'm not sure you could have done a lot more without certain unique skills (tennis instructor/multi-lingual secretary etc) as April was particularly quiet. However, you will know for next time that Spanish opens far more doors than English and that looking for ordinary bar work is a low paid gamble.
Many people dismiss the idea, but good cleaners generally get paid well (up to €9 or €10 Euros per hour for someone hard-working and reliable) but its amazing how many English are too proud and would rather waste their precious evenings working in old-men's bars collecting glasses or having their asses groped to sell a jelly-shot for 50c commission for 6 nights per week.
5 full days cleaning with maybe a bit of ironing thrown in to break up the monotony, could earn up to €300 cash in hand (5 days for 6 hrs per day e.g. 11am - 5pm). That's €1,200 per month !! And thats one of the few jobs in Tenerife where you could have the entire weekend off. Hard work? Maybe, but what good paid job isn't. And on a good day, no one pinches your arse. Ok, so it will take a while to build up a client base, but word of good cleaners travels fast, plus you have your savings to carry you through whilst you put the word (or fliers) around the most upmarket villas and apartments. Hell, they might even let you use their pool at the end of your shift...

Aww thanks Seagul !
Yeah cleaning is definately something to be considered I agree funky, you get the benefit of you are always on the move to therefore loosing weight and keeping fit and me being SAD I LOVE cleaning, my own house I know it would probably be different being a job but it is the same for any job when you have done it a while ..... but I find cleaning theraputic, once you have finished it has one of the best elements of job satisfaction seeing the end result...........
Well done Claire..... it can be hard, when we went out in April it was the change from Scandi to English season and quiet, we just got lucky.....although I did try 2 jobs before I found the one I preferred....
You now have some great knowledge to build upon if you try it again!

I do not want to put a dampener on that for you, but wanted to point out...
Social payment approx 200 euros per month
Accountancy if you are self employed 150 to 200 euros per month
Tax's paid quarterly.
Insurance required by law.
Materials.
Car plus petrol or diesel.
Funky is right though, it is hard work. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

I was waiting for that post Karl
Silly me, I forgot that 99% of cleaners on the island are entirely legal and pay all their insurance and taxes.... _________________ My Paranoia-Management Therapy is going great! Now they're only watching me half the time.... |
