The only qualification you need is a large bank balance and a steady income to support the bar. Read the numerous posts on here. _________________ .

thanx rob, so lets say for instance i had a healthy bank balance, say.. enough to buy freehold and just to run a little bar to occupy my time as a hobby, not to stress myself out too much. would you say it would be good? _________________ rudeness is not an option

If that's the life that you like then go for it
Alternatively why not keep your healthy bank balance and go and work for someone else if you only need something to do as a hobby? That way you get to do what you want to do as well as keeping your money, then if you discover that being a bartender in Tenerife is not all you thought it would be you can move on to something else. As I've said many times..... most bars that are bought are up for sale again within months. Ever wondered why? _________________ .

I wouldn't say (and I think most bar owners would agree with me) that running a bar equals relaxing or living the nice life. Most bar owners have to work more hours than most employees and don't get much time out for doing what they like/spending with their families.
What do you call living a nice life? I'm sure anyone who runs a business would say that working for someone else is more relaxing than working for yourself as once you clock off you don't have to think about it.
Did you run a business in UK? If so, was that easy? If not do you think it will be easier in a foreign country? Do you speak Spanish? If so, you may find it a bit easier than some of the other Brits running businesses here who don't.
We have heard so many stories about things going wrong for people (and several of those were people who wanted to run a bar). Unfortunately most won't come back and write about their experiences on the forum though. _________________ Who am I? From all the Ex bar owners I have met and spoken with there is no such thing as an easy to run little bar. Especially one that makes some money.
Its hard work.
Bar owners will probably paint a nice rosy picture for you, I would speak to some Ex Bar Owners that you tell you as it is. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

i must admit there are not any sites with ex owners telling there sides of the storys, i have taken in what you all have said, maybe it would be better to work for someone else, i just worry i'd be treated like crap. but then there are many bars on the island top choose from lol.
i think i may have to re concider and just work for someone else as i dont speak much spanish either. _________________ rudeness is not an option

If you work well and are good at your job, why on earth would anyone treat you like crap?
If you are that good and can afford to give a free trial there'll always be someone willing to employ you. _________________ .

It's not the skill of pulling pints that lets them down but the lack of marketing skills, insufficient working capital plus the inability to speak the language.
If you had a small bar that required no staff....... who would do "all the crap"? _________________ .

I just can't understand why on earth anyone would want to run a bar in Tenerife! People come here for the sun and laid back lifestyle and then buy a bar and work 16 hours a day for little monetary gain. The mind boggles. Not meant to offend anyone just my opinion! _________________ Live your life before its too late! |

It's the opinion of most of us who have lived here for a time. There are a VERY few people who really love the lifestyle and are not worried about making a real living but they are in a very small minority. _________________ .

Maybe Mark can enlighten us as to why it seems like such a good idea. Why had you been thinking about doing this Mark? What is the attraction? Do people like to be stuck in a bar 12-18 hours per day? I can't imagine doing it, especially not out here!
I think if I were to set up a business out here I would try to do something where I could spend at least part of the day outside or one that made me lots of money and I didn't have to work many hours (I'm still racking my brains trying to come up with the answer to that one!!) _________________ Who am I?
