Post Post subject: Learning Spanish Reply with quote

After a year in Germany, with the best intention of learning Deutsch, I will leave knowing almost none of the language.

It is not that I didn't try. I have used language books, CDs, online resources, and took live classes for 2 1/2 hours per night, three nights per week, for two months. I took lots of notes and studied, and came away knowing nothing useful of German.

This move, I would like to start conversing in Spanish and improve daily.

Being an English teacher, I have studied learning styles. I know what works for me and what doesn't. I need to use the language in conversation every day or it won't stick. So I have come up with phrases to learn in Spanish, which in theory will enable anyone I meet to be my Spanish teacher (if they are so inclined.)

If anyone here has time, I will post the English phrases which are translated into Spanish by a free online translation service. Those translations usually are not so good. So I would appreciate help with making the Spanish more street-wise.

Some of the phrases are specific to me, what I do, etc. But many would also be helpful for anyone else wanting to learning Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country. It is still a fairly short list of phrases. Anyone interested?

There is a spanish speaking section on the forum, is useful for members to converse with other members in spanish, get help on the odd translation here and there and generally keep the spanish going/improve.

Im sure there will be people who will reply and help you, but I feel that maybe if you overuse the "service" they will lose interest as we arent really spanish teachers and cant do the job of one for free.

Have you considered actually going to as spanish teacher. If you are unable to see one due to moving etc then Im sure there must be online lessons/help you can receive...but, you will have to pay for it.
Im afraid nothing in this world is free....especially these days.

Full respect for trying to learn the language and I wish you the best of luck, just make sure you dont use the forum for a free spanish course and thats it.

Smile

Yes, I appreciate the concerns about misusing the forum.

The cultures in various forums I visit are so different. It is hard to keep track of what is accepted and what is not.

But I think that what I had in mind with the short list could not be taken as misuse. And it is intended to be helpful to others who want to learn useful Spanish phrases as well.

I was a 'pioneering' English teacher on Myngle, the language marketplace and designed English lessons which are still available there as PowerPoint slide shows. I took a couple of German lessons over Myngle. But as mentioned in my post, such instruction has been useless to me. It just doesn't stick. I appreciate the talent and enthusiasm of Myngle, but have moved on because it is 'not me.'

So my plan is to come to Tenerife with a few key phrases under my belt, such as asking the people I am talking with to correct my Spanish as I am communicating with them, so I can learn in real-life practice.

I will check the Spanish forum. Thanks for pointing me to it.

No, dont get me wrong, I totally respect you for trying to learn, and think it is a good idea to come onto a forum such as this for help.
My point was that it may be perceived by some as a little cheeky if that is ALL you do, as in, not partake in other threads etc.

I wish you luck though and welcome a few phrases as it would keep my spanish up as well Smile

Good point.

Having learned from experience, I have been more aware this time of forum culture in general. Browsed the messages before I posted. Read the rules, although I slipped by putting a link in my signature.

I am on a few different forums on the net, and they have quite a range of cultures, of what is acceptable and what is not. What one bans another encourages. But I know that some people get huffy if they perceive a breaking or bending of the rules or violation of the unwritten culture.

Gracias por traerlo a mi atención como un nuevo participante.

Just seen this thread after having posted the corrections on the Spanish section!! If you need regular translations of phrases, the website I suggested has a forum designed specifically for this whereby you put your attempt and others (among the many professional translators on there) will post a reply within minutes usually. It is not a place for general chit chat but for finding meanings, there is no better place!
