 Post subject: Star-gazing Wanderers Coming to Tenerife |

Hola,
Coming here, to this board and these forums, is like stepping into a gathering of friends. You and I don't know each other so well yet, but that's the point, isn't it? To jump in and make introductions and start getting acquainted.
Kati grew up in communist East Germany. Some years after the wall came down, she moved with her two sons to the south of Spain.
She is a nurse, but that does nothing to describe what she puts into her profession. I am a writer and haven't the words. She has a rare depth of compassion and understanding and spiritual strength.
She feels herself as a visionary mystic. Intuition, creativity, awareness and trust are key words in her ventures to know the Self. Kati was born August 22, 1961 in Lenzen, Germany.
I am currently writing true short stories and poetry into a book with a theme that could be described as 'The Nature of Humanity.' That fits together with photography and the presentations I create with music (composed by others) and narration. A few of my photos are in the gallery on this site. I am a certified foot reflexologist and TEFL certified (Teacher of English as a Foreign Language.) I play a little didgeridoo, do a little yoga, and connect well with nature.
I have a passion for alleviating suffering through self-awareness and self-responsibility, and realizing personal and global peace through compassionate, creative living. I was born May 29, 1953 in Idaho, America (in case anyone is into astrology or numerology.)
We do have a (very) occasional beer and loosen up.

Hi and a formal welcome to our forum to you both. I was also born in Germany (near Köln) but was brought up in rural Mid-Wales. I went back to Germany when I was 18 to see where I was born and stayed for two years to learn the language (I had already been studying it at school but wanted to be able to speak it properly!).

Hi Jenny,
Hmmm. It is an interesting question and there are different ways to answer it.
We thought we moved to Germany for certain reasons, but discovered there was another reason altogether. Here I found a stone labyrinth in a sheep pasture and had a vision about rings of awareness and mystical science.
Now I am writing the book and developing presentations for our future lifestyle.
Northern Germany has been great as a seedbed. Now it is time for some sunshine so the seedlings of our envisioned future can grow.
We were closing in on a live-in caregiving assignment for a paraplegic man in southern England. But that was starting to feel shaky. It is a small house, very rural and isolated, cold and rainy winter, small pay. We haven't money for a car. The man told us he is autocratic. We are very independent-minded. It was not a fit.
Then a friend here in Malente, who was in my English class, suggested we three move to the Canaries, share housing and start-up businesses. Kati and I are presently without funds, she has some, we thought it could work.
Kati and I started researching the Canaries. We had considered moving back to Andalusia, but it has changed much since we were there. We lived on Hawaii too, and the Canaries have an appeal though we know they are not exactly like anyplace we have lived before, just with some of the elements.
Kati put her resume in for a job opening on Tenerife yesterday. I can teach English, give foot reflexology, and we both are energy healers. What we need is more time for the book to be written and the presentations made so we can start living that dream.
The woman who suggested the move together is having second thoughts. She has to sell her house, it is more complicated for her. We were going to move from Germany anyway, before her suggestion, and gave notice on our apartment.
Are the Canaries for us? Well, we have questions too. But I will post those later. Thanks for asking! |

Andalucia gets really hot in the summer and is not very warm in the winter. The advantage of the Canary Islands is that it is warm all year round, getting neither too hot nor too cold (see Weather Section on the forum for average temperatures).

Ah, I see it is Andalucia, not Andalusia. And I lived there a year. But, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since 2001!
Yes, the temperatures on Tenerife are an attraction.
We are also attracted by our feeling of the island's mystique. The mystical-sounding stories from our lives and adventures sometimes raise eyebrows or cause eyes to glaze over, but they are from our experience and help form who we are.
We also have some questions about our compatibility with the islands. We like quiet. Will we find it there? |

It all depends on what you mean by quiet. Absolute silence? Only up in the remote mountainous areas, then you'll have no clients either!

That is a point. No, I don't mean absolute silence.
But we have memories of the Spanish nightlife!
Compared with Hawaii, where all is dark and quiet after 8:00 p.m. on the Big Island, for example.
I just mean, places to live where there is not all night partying or bar noise.
And where town is still reachable without a car. |

I live in a village in the north that is generally quiet but for the past two weeks it has been anything but with music from noon until as late as 1-2 am with the fiesta going on! 
I thoroughly recommend Tenerife though!

It's not necessary to live in the hills to find peace and quiet in Tenerife. There are areas within Puerto de la Cruz where you can hear the silence sitting on your balcony, and yet it's only an easy fifteen minute walk away from the town centre.

Kati sent her C.V. to an employer in Puerto de la Cruz.
Photos of Tenerife we've seen on the Web look great.
We have a way of testing our feelings over time about larger decisions, and Tenerife is still feeling good.
Of course there are always trade-offs. Even paradise isn't perfect for everyone all the time.
Hawaii tends to chew people up and spit them out if they don't belong on the island. The night before we left, though, Pele appeared to Kati in a dream and asked, 'why do you leave me?'
We have an energetic connection with volcanic Tenerife without having been there.
After some months in the dullness of survival security, we are ready for more adventure. |

Tenerife isn't for everyone...but is anywhere! Only you can decide if it's for you. It is unusual for people to move here without knowing the island well but you sound as if you are looking into it and have more instinct than many. PLUS you don't have ties such as kids (unless I've missed something!) so if you move here and really don't like it, you can move on.
I also agree that there are plenty of quiet areas that aren't too remote. Perhaps you'll have to move about a bit in the beginning to decide where you like best. People on the forum can give you their opinions and suggest places according to what you want but you will have to try them for yourselves to see what really suits you and your needs.

Yes, fortunately there is not one place that is for everyone.
Else, the whole human population would be in that one place.
Than the earth would tip on its side because of the lop-sided weight and it would wreak havoc with the environment.
We've done our fair share by moving around to keep the earth in balance, but truly we are ready for a home base.
When we traveled from Hawaii to New Zealand, our idea was to own nothing more in the world than what we could carry in our backpacks.
They were huge backpacks, but we did it. Nothing in storage, no bank accounts, and 300 USD for three months.
Besides that, we discovered we were not the right age for work permits. Too old for this, too young for that.
As we sat on steps in the square of Christchurch, waiting for an office to open so we could find out more about our options, a young woman overheard us talking.
She interjected, "My boyfriend can tell you how to get a job. He did it. He will be here soon, I am waiting for him."
Sure enough, he told us that his employer, a new laundry plant in Queenstown, would hire us. We just needed to get a social security number (and we could do that by fax) and open a bank account for the paycheck deposits. It all went smoothly and we were employed. There is much more to this story. And we have other stories of how people told us we would have no chance to get a job (such as in Hana, a tiny village in the middle of the rainforest on Maui) yet we did.
We have two sons, both grown young men. One has the family he longed for, and lives near Yosemite in California. The other is going to university in Germany, as he long desired.
