Post subject: A Question about Directions |
|
|
Kati and I were driving up through southern Colorado to my hometown in the north. We weren't sure of the roads and I stopped at a health food store to ask.
The store clerk said to the customers in general, "If anyone has any questions, just let me know."
I responded in a quiet voice, "I have a question about directions."
She led me to the far end of the small store and was looking at bottles on the bottom shelf. Then, a little startled with her own realization, she exclaimed, "Oh! I thought you said 'erections'!" |

lol goodness how embarrassing for her.
What was your reply?
Colorado is beautiful, I was lucky enough to go sking a long time ago on Copper Mountain. Sking is the most exhausting sport ever, I have never been since.

Good question, Karl.
She seemed a down-to-earth person, and it was a rural town. I think she just took it in stride.
I grinned big, told her where we were headed, thanked her for the directions and chuckled as I went out of the store.
My hometown, a college town north of Denver, had buses that took kids up to the mountains for skiing in the winter. I went often in my teens.
The best times for me, as a social loner, were on the upper slopes where the challenge was to dig the edge of one ski into the crust to keep from sliding off the mountain. I liked making hard turns on a mogul (for those unfamiliar, "a bump or mound of hard snow on a ski slope.")
On the upper slopes, it felt like just the mountain and me. That ski area, Hidden Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park, has been closed to the environmental impact.
I am otherwise not sports-inclined, but skiing in those years was a great experience. You are right, though, it takes a lot of exertion.
Have you thought you'd ever like to visit Colorado or America again? |

It was a long time ago and I went with an old girlfriend who was American, her hometown is Denver.
We went to Toronto as I wanted to go up the tall tower, cannot remember what its called, however on arrival and seeing the GLASS lift on the OUTSIDE of the building I soon changed my mind.
Also visited Washington and San Fran which was excellent. Esp the street guys with their tricks who fleece the poor punters who think they can guess where the pea has gone lol !!!
Sadly, and I was quite young, I went to Washington instead of NY because of media hype and all the stuff you read and / or see on TV, I thought I may get shot or stabbed or robbed !!!! Sad really.

Well, overall it sounds like you had quite an interesting experience.
In my teens, a friend and I went on a mission in a rough neighborhood of NYC at night. It was to get money or the movie camera back from a man who said he'd buy it from my business partner. We were carrying backpacks, and I picked a brick up from the side of the street and put it in the pack, with the idea to swing it at them if someone tried to mug us!
But, there was no need. As you probably know now, NYC during the day is pretty safe with just using common sense. But I still wouldn't want to walk alone in some neighborhoods at night. On the other hand, my dad rode his bicycle around the perimeter of America in his sixties. People would warn him about "bad neighborhoods" but he would pedal through them, his bike laden with camping and camera gear, and would have friendly exchanges with pedestrians and had no problems.
I live in the S.F. area for a year but never saw the pea trick. Loved crossing the Golden Gate Bridge each week on our days off, though. |

Yes the Golden Gate is a wonderful site. One of the things I wanted to see around the world.
2 of the others that I never got time or chance to see were Niagra (or Viagra as your lady in the shop may think) Falls and of course the Grand Canyon.
Have you seen them? I imagine seeing the Grand Canyon is an experience and quite over whelming. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

I lived in Salford, Manchester and used to walk home from Uni late at night. I have also been through Moss Side several times. These are supposed to be (or were) the worst areas of Manchester but I never had any problems. Similarly, my parents lived in Bahrain and were warned about the many local thieves but, on the contrary, tell tales of locals who, upon visiting their homes and commenting on how beautiful a picture or ornament looked, would be offered it as a gift! _________________ Who am I? I was born and lived in Rusholme Manchester for 28 years. You are a brave lady Jenny.
When I lived in Hong Kong for 6 years you could walk around at any time of the day or night. I never had any problems and felt very safe.
The worst place I have felt the most uncomfortable at night was Mexico City Centre. Now you do not wanna be wandering around there after dark I can promise you.

I saw the Grand Canyon as a child with my family and would love to experience it again as an adult.
Smart pun about Niagra/Viagra, Karl!
As an aside, can someone tell me how to insert an image inline with a post? When I know how, I will post a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Cheers!

Hi Gary
You need to use a site that holds your photos and link it to there.
I use photobucket.com its easy to use and free.
Please do not forget to resize your images if they are large, otherwise when you post them they will be enormous.
When you have uploaded your image to photobucket copy and paste the Image, IMG, link into your post this will then display your photo
Any probs give me a shout.

Do you feel this has anything to do with the energy you put out, with trust and confidence, or maybe innocence?
It is said that dogs smell fear and are provoked by it to attack. Does that happen sometimes in human situations as well?
Your story of people offering gifts from their home in that situation is brilliant. I have also seen people in homeless shelters offer warmth and kindness to others and doing generous things. |

I think it was a mixture of both confidence and innocence - I was often walking back from TaeKwonDo classes so felt strong and also was a fairly innocent girl from the country. I never remember feeling scared. Perhaps sometimes I had also downed some Dutch courage _________________ Who am I?
