Hi and welcome to the forum,

There are many threads on the forum about living and working in Tenerife.

Doing what?

Have you got any ideas what you / your son / your daughter want to do? Do they want to do it as well, or is it just your dream?

There was a very interesting post recently by Karl Here about businesses in Tenerife which you may find interesting, you'll need to read the whole thread as the interesting post wasn't Karls first on the thread.

You certainly won't get rich quickly running a bar.

MICHELLEH1704 wrote:

Running a bar will ceratinly be a different lifestyle.....about 16 (or more) hours a day, 7 days a week Smile

Do any of you speak Spanish?

There's only one way to make a small fortune out of running a bar....... that's to start with a big fortune!

Seriously, if you have sufficient funds to buy a decent sized bar and have the business acumen and experience then it can pay, otherwise it's a lot of hard work for very little return but some people are so keen on the life that money really isn't important, they're quite happy to scrape along and not be able to afford the 'normal' things in life.

Most (not quite all) bars are up for sale again after a few months when people realise that others have been telling them the truth that owning a bar is far worse than working in one.

the only pointers I can give you are from my own personal experience.

There are customers here.

Food must be fresh, good quality and value for money. Staff must be polite and friendly and helpful at all times. Maybe a bit of quality entertainment every now and then.

It you can meet this criteria then you should do well. Unlike 90 per cent of other bars and cafes in the tourist areas that think some beer, instant coffee, karaoke, and a full greasy english is gonna pull the money spending crowds in.

Also, its a long story, if a mother and child come in and ask to use the loo, do not ask for a euro lol !!!!!! Not only is it the law to let them unless you have a dress code or door charge, its just courteous and they may come back or even stay for an icecream. That happened to my wife and son !!!!

As you've got as far as deciding which bar you may possibly buy the next sensible move is to get a good accountant to look at the whole aspect of the business including legal papers, opening licence etc. You'll pay for this service but it will be the best money you can spend and may save many tears later?

Several of us with businesses here use this company and we all recommend them... http://www.sun4free.com/directory/tenerifebusiness437.htm

Make sure you do get everything checked by a professional - licences, electrics etc. Don't leave a stone unturned and if you have any doubts, don't do it.

Do you speak Spanish? This will make your life a lot easier here, when checking all these things (you are less likely to get conned) and for life in general (Doctor's visits, sorting out paperwork, day to day running of a business).

Do you have a good chunk of money reserved for stocking/marketing/unforseen expenses? Many people spend all their capital buying the bar and keep insufficient for running costs ie they're under capitalised, the single most common reason for going bust.
