Post Post subject: Why Santa Úrsula ayuntamiento gets top marks from me Reply with quote

The ayuntamiento in Santa Úrsula has provided Monarch Butterfly heaven in a border outside, which you can see in the photo below - the border is under the road sign.

There are lots of Milkweed seeds being blown away from the seed pods that are ripening and there are thousands of little seedlings coming up in the border!

Not only that but across the road two gardens and a floristeria have the plant growing too.

And if all of that wasn't good enough today I spotted a butterfly I have never seen before but is said to live on the island. It was a Plain Tiger or African Monarch (Danaus chrysippus), which is closely related to the Monarch (Danaus plexippus).

The photo of the African Monarch isn't too good because I had to lean over a wall and take it from afar but it shows the species.

Like the Monarch, the African Monarch's caterpillars eat Milkweed so it appears that the local council have knowingly or unknowingly encouraged two beautiful butterflies to breed in the town , and for local gardeners to grow the plant too.

This also means that both species have somehow found the place and their food plant.

Note the border behind the car - Monarch heaven!

Close up on the Milkweed showing seed pods and seedlings.
