I have done my homework but using the search engine is beyond me so i will have to ask i am afraid
Is it the norm for children to have a social security number and what do they need it for?
Laurens school have been a nightmare and it has taken us nearly 3 weeks of going down on a daily basis to finally get her in, every time we go down they invent something else that isn't on the list of things that we have to go away and get.
Friday she told us they needed NIE, medical card and school report from the uk so we took it down yest only to be told that she now needs a social security number and a full medical doing by a doctor and a certificate providing!!!
She could enter the army with all the paperwork thay have had from us so far!!
Help appreciated. |

Hmmmmmm very strange. I ahve never heard of a medical and social security number being required by a shool.
It does seem rather strange.
My children are covered under Neil's and my social security numbers. I got them added and then they have a medical card...BUT they take ages to come through.
Maybe if you add them on to your own numbers and register them with the doctors, that will issue them a medicla number and maybe its that...that they want.
what a fuss though.. _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Same for us, Tom is under our Social number. And yes, we have been here 2 and a half years and are still waiting for a card.
You can ask for a 'Tarjeta Sanitaria' which is an A4 piece of paper with all your details on and is stamped until your card arrives, this can be done at reception at the doctors in Adeje. You should get one each, if your social number is active of course.
NIE, Tom does not have one and I cannot remember why, think it is something to do with a card for free school books or something, however we need to get him one which is on our list of things to do.
Hope this helps. Sorry its not more.
EDIT. Are you sure they said medical card and not medical book, or as its known here Libro de Familia, I think. Its a record of your child's medical history and the school must see it, or as we did take your childs UK medical history. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Hi Guys,
Thay have had her UK Medical card because they wanted to see her NHS number and have also given them her list of vaccinations from the Uk doctor, but now they want her to have a medical and i have had to buy a certificado medico oficial which i now have to take her to have a full medical and the doctor to sign this certificate so i can then send it in to school
Then this social security number is confusing me too as i dont know why she needs one as they have had mine and Shauns.
Anyway the top and bottom of it is that they have allowed her to start school but she has 10 days to get these 2 bits into school......shoud i risk not doing the social number and just have the medical done or am i been naughty? |

That is totally bizzare.!!!!!
the social number (if needed )...grrrr....is very easy to get hold of. Just a quick visist to the office in los cristianos. Still though, I don't understand why she needs her own one....its not as if she is working and paying national insurance lol.....that comes under you.!
The medical is another thing all together...Did you ask them why they needed one??? Has everyone in the school had to have one??? I only had to give a copy of updated vaccines...like at the doctors...If thats what they want, then.....you may have to get it.
Funny how one school wants not much but the other wants your whole live history....mmmm _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Yes strange. You are between a rock and a hard place.
Tom had to provide a medical certificate for his sports activities at the sports centre, nothing to do with school. You buy the certificate at a stationers for 3 euros and then have to make an appt at the doctors to get them to sign it off he is ok to do sports, then hand it in to the sports centre.
The certificate is called Certificado Medico Oficial but I am not sure if this is the one they want or not. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

What is it they are asking for in Spanish? Get the school to write it all down (the whole list) and why for each thing, then maybe we can get to the bottom of this (if I don't get rushed into hospital in the meantime )
Ask them: ¿Qué papeles debo de traer? y ¿Por qúe los necesitan?
And if not on the list ask them: ¿Porqúe no está en la lista?
Xoaquin also has the same social number as me but with B01 at the end.
Have you mentioned (or is it somewhere in the paperwork) that Lauren has some kind of illness? That could be the reason they are asking her to take a medical exam. Just a thought.
Do you know anyone else in the same school? Or could you perhaps get chatting to other parents and find out if they had the same problem when enrolling their kids. They may be able to shed more light on this for you. _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17
I will make this day a happy one for I alone can determine what kind of day it will be. |

As far as i know they have all to have a medical as most of Laurens friends seem to have had one
The social number is baffling me though as i really dont understand why it is needed, i personally think it is just the woman at the office been as anti-english as possible you should see the hatred in her eyes when we turn up to the office
She even clapped at Lauren when she turned up with her friend and told her that we now had everything(i do have to add that most of the things were not on the list but think it pleased her in someway to see us travelling half of Tenerife to get these things for her)
Oh well will get the medical done hopefully this week.
All the best to you Jenny |
