Post subject: Fly Tipping!!! |
|
|
On our recent holiday we have been appalled at how fly tipping is increasing on the island. Most of this seems to be from builders.
We assume this is not the larger contractors, but the smaller builders who after carrying out say a bathroom/kitchen refurbishment or an extension, decide to dump rubbish wherever they can.
One place in particular is in Callao Salvaje (where we are looking to take up residence). There is a space between the Callao Gardens and San Francisco complexes and when we visited in July last year, we noticed a bit of fly tipping.
Having just visited last week, this space is now disgusting! There are complete baths, sinks, tiles and piles of rubble, obviously dumped by various builders.
Surely someone sees this happening. Although I suppose the residents cannot do anything except report it. Even if large fines were to be imposed, the offenders would have to be caught by the authorities.
Why do people do this, it so much spoils the look of the Island?
I remember Bardofely having a rant about the council workers pruning trees and throwing the waste down a barranco, so I suppose I am wasting my time in complaining but I just wanted to vent my anger.
Don’t people care about their surroundings! _________________ Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional. |

Sorry Mary I missed this post when you posted it, yes I have to admit I noticed this when I was last over, this is the half built area I presume your refering to.
Apparently this is supposed to be town houses with shops below and from what I heard when I was last over they are due to continue with this build soon. maybe when you next visit it will be looking more like a work in progress building site than a rubbish tip..... lets hope so anyway. _________________ off to Turkey for a change on the 30th of July for 2 weeks, back in the reef in December tho..... |

It seems to me that standards are going down here and not just with fly tipping but litter and graffiti as well! I remember when I first came here in 2002 how impressed I was with how clean Tenerife was, admittedly I only saw the north, but places like Puerto I saw then now are suffering with litter and graffiti that were not there before. These problems seem to be contagious. Someone starts making a mess or posting graffitti and then others follow! It is a real shame and I agree it spoils the island.
What I find really weird about it is that the majority of residents are very house-proud and cleanliness and hygiene are very important so to find that a blind eye is turned to rubbish tipping seems at odds with this.
There is graffitti and grafitti though and I am not opposed to all of it because there are some real artists who do murals but the sort I think spoils an area is the signatures and daubings done by teenagers. _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |

| It seems that in Mainland Spain as well as the islands The Locals have a strange view of there area. you always find people are very house proud and have neat and tidy houses and gardens but the responsibility always stops at the front gate. On the mainland even in quite affluent areas the pavements are covered with rubbish and discarded building materials but behind the garden gate you would be hard pushed to find a leaf out of place. |

The question is why are they like this? I have seen a lot of it and it makes no sense to me! _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |

| It seems mad to me, In the UK you get messy streets but the hole area is normal a mess both the public and private. My sister lives in a bad area and the locals just through old furniture and appliances out on the street in the knowledge that after the local kids have set light to it, the council will clear it up. where i live if there is litter on the street outside your house you pick it up. I cant understand how you get such a difference in outlook. |

I know where you mean Dianne, we think that building looks bad too, but I really meant the area up between Callao Gardens and San Francisco complexes.
(We walked along the access road between the top end of San Francisco and Alto Viso and then back down to the road and had to veer around the builders rubbish, old baths and tiles, rubble etc. obviously just dumped there.
Ah well, as you said perhaps the area will look better if they get on with the building you mentioned. _________________ Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional. |

I have to agree with you both, Bard & Leahcim.
Standards are dropping everywhere. Fly tipping, graffitti, litter, etc.
It doesn't make any sense to me either why people are like this.
And don't mention the dog poo!!!
Dog poo is not an issue in the UK as people seem to accept the fact they have to pick up after their pets (there are even special bins for them) but in Spain it is a different story. _________________ Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional. |

I agree that it's a terrible problem but it's not only the locals, many holiday makers discard rubbish also.... I saw a group of about 8 young British girls walking down the road and 2 of them threw down empty coke cans even though there are plenty of litter bins. _________________ .
