Hello everyone,
My name's Mandy I'm new to the forum just joined last week. I'm currently considering moving to Tenerife (me and half the world!!) and have been searching the site for information before asking questions that you've already answered a thousand times! I'm a 28 yr old Irish girl and have lived in Boston for the last 2 years so I have experience of living abroad. I would be coming over in March and wondered if this is a good time to look for work? I've worked in Pubs for the last 10 years and while living in the USA worked in an Irish bar although would like to find admin/book-keeping work when I learn the language as this is my profession. My main concern is accomodation as i would be travelling on my own. How easy is it to find accomodation and roomates? Has anyone any advice on this subject?
I must compliment you on your site as i found it very helpful finding the information I need. Thanks In advance

Hi Mandy! Welcome!
It is easy to find accomodation here and you could book into a pension (boarding house) for a few nights while you found somewhere to rent if you weren't able to find anywhere in advance of arriving here! _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |

Hi Mandy, Welcome and it's good to see a sensible considered post. Have you read http://www.sun4free.com/articles/living-in-tenerife.php
as well as http://www.sun4free.com/articles/working-in-tenerife.php
I usually advise coming on a cheap package tour as this leaves you immediately free to start looking for work and accommodation. It may seem cheaper to get a flight and then look for somewhere cheap to stay but add in the convenience factor of not having to spend time buying/preparing food etc and a package usually works out well.
There's usually work in March but after Easter things start to slow a bit till the summer rush so make sure you have some cash behind you. Admin work is not easy to find without Spanish (I didn't say impossible). Good workers are in short supply although there are plenty of applicants for every job, the moral is no matter how poor the job, work well and your reputation will spread, this is a small island. |

Mandy, there's a room going here at present and here's the details:
Double room to let to single person in ground floor apt, 350 euros for single person, 550 for 2 people inc bills apart from phone and share of gas bottles. Deposit required equivalent to one months rent. Property is for sale so tenants must be willing to show potential buyers around and keep the place clean and tidy. 6 month tenancy agreement available. No children, prefer non-smokers, no pets unless very well behaved.
It would be sharing with me in Costa del Silencio BTW! _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |

Hi Mandy!
I'm new to the forum too but have lived in Tenerife for quite a few years. As Rob said, package deal is a good idea. I did it as it gave me the chance to look properly for decent accommodation.
Regarding work here, I reckon if you're keen to learn the language you'll soon find office work. Have you got a bloke? You don't have to answer that, but in case you haven't, best way to learn the language mega quick is to get yourself a Spanish one It worked for me!! |

Och You guys are so nice
Rob thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Bardofely, thanks so much for the offer but thanks to the forum i've met another girl and we're moving over the same time to look for somewhere together but again thanks so much for the offer. Mamajb thanks for the special advice it made me laugh
To answer your question (I don't mind) no I haven't got a bloke but since I've been visiting ternerife in the last five years I've been going out with the same spanish guy every time I've visited, he might be a wee part of the reason I love it over there so much
So you never know i'll have to turn on the charm when I get there!!! |

Glad you've got yourself sorted. Guess you'll have no problem learning Spanish
Be careful with Spanish blokes. I'm not implying that yours is a Don Juan but be warned! Or get some thick rope and tie him to...whatever so he doesn't run off with the next unsuspecting tourist!! I've been a victim and it wasn't nice Then my husband came along and helped mend the wound!!
Anyway let's hope it all works out for you. Good luck. |
