Thanks for your replies. I'll have to re-evaluate our cycling plans.. will probably play it safe and stick to the buses! 
Bardofely - many thanks for your advice, I've printed it off and put it in my travel guide and will definitely act on that!!

| You're welcome and BTW a friend who mine who comes from the Canary Islands has called me "an expert on Tenerife" and I do all my travelling on buses because I don't drive. I think they are excellent value and you can go on some spectacular journeys for a few Euros. |

You have to be a pretty fit cyclist though. The climb normally takes around 2-3 hours (although some give up about half way up).
