Post Post subject: The baking weeks ??? Reply with quote

I have heard through a friend that there are certain times of the year only for periods of 1 or 2 weeks when it is uncomfortably hot.

Something to do with the Saraha wind or no wind cannot remember.

I was told temps can reach 40 plus but I think that is just an exaggeration.

Or is it? Anyone know about these extremes and when they happen?

They happen whenever they feel like it - they call it "calima". When Xoauquin was born in April 2002 we had 4 days of it - it was awful! You'll know when it happens Shocked

Quote:
Calima is fine dust or sand blown over the Atlantic Ocean from the Morroccan Sahara Desert to the Canary Islands.

This phenomenon can happen at any time of year but is usually associated with the hot air found over the islands during the summer months, ranging in time scale from a few hours up to a week. The Calima is caused by a duststorm that is stirred up by high winds in the Sahara and is then driven over the Canary Islands by south easterly winds. The fine sand particles cause the air to become thick and visibility becomes rather like that experienced during a thick fog, depending on the severity. During the Calima, every surface will be covered in fine reddish brown dust.

Many Canarian inhabitants experience allergy-like sinus and respiratory problems similar to those of hayfever during the Calima.

last year when we had a calima on the 4th september the temperature went up to 44 degs at 8 AM..........the breeze was like a hair dryer.........

when this happens you either go to a shopping mall (for the air con.....heehee)

or you stay in doors with fans, air con......and lots of water....

i have seen people think that the weather is 'overcast' as this is how it looks.

believe me.....it is not overcast and you will certainly burn.......i see a lot of 'lobster walking around after a calima.

BE CAREFUL................

The last time I checked the highest official temp in Spain was 40.5 C in Sevilla . It's rare to get a Calima in the summer but it does happen. Many incredible temps are 'recorded' but not in 'Stevensons boxes' Having said that many car thermometers are reasonably accurate if you're travelling at speed (not having just got into the car after it's been parked) and I have seen temps of 45C on the mway at Las Chafiras a local hotspot.

Why thank you Sir, I like to feel useful and your Spanish is most definitely improving Wink Laughing

Sara, you pronounce it Shoakeeng or Jo as a lot of the English people around us say. It comes from the Spanish Joaquin but as my husband is from Galicia it has the X instead of the J (they say Xuan (pronounced Shuan) instead of Juan etc - and it sounds much nicer, less guttural)

The mainland Spanish look on the Canarians as peasants because of their accent... I suppose to them it's a bit like Geordie Laughing

(back on topic) You can see a few images of what a calima looks like on satellite imagery here :

Amazing, isn't it?!

Why on earth did you feel it necessary to say that? Laughing

Did you think for some imaginable reason that maybe 'certain forum members' might take it the wrong way and send the thread wildly off topic?

No... of course not. Who in their right mind would do such a thing?

I know Kirsty, thanks for bringing back down to reality who indeed would stray off the subject when I happened to quite innocently mention I was feeling all hot and sticky just thinking about it.

Who indeed !!!!

Very Happy

hmm, kirsty, thanks for sourcing the pictures. i guess that Calima, at 'her' peak must be quite forceful. i would not like to obstruct her path, or risk getting completely blown away. what a calamity that could be.....

Yes... and no... it's not so much the wind, as the sand particles that are caried on it. It doesn't tend to be really gusty during a calima... a little, I suppose... however you end up getting loads of snot due to the dust particles getting up your nose, it's boiling hot and your car looks like it's been buried in a sand dune for a week Very Happy
