On a pavement in Agua Garcia there were lots of pears that had fallen of a tree and many were rotting and fermenting in the sun. Honeybees were collecting the sugary juices.

Good photo Bard, we see some bees here but tinyish would not think they are honey bees. Speaking of which when we were in Dorset we had a bumble bee nest in our garden (well in a hole) dog was not that impressed, to be honest nor was I, but they were gone within 8 weeks, interesting though Very Happy

The bee in the pic was a lot smaller than it looks there and I expect what you see are honeybees, which are very plentiful on the island. I even know where there are hives on wasteground near Las Galletas and here in Icod there are 2 nests in another big Dragon Tree in a square in the city. Up on Teide there are a lot of hives too.

Bumblebees are becoming rare in the UK and many species are actually endangered now!

Yes I only discovered about the bumble bee after we had the contacted the Council who put me in touch with a Bumble Bee expert (hope that does not sound too sad) who explained to us about them, and he added count yourself lucky they have chosen your garden and that they would only be there for a short time, and to enjoy them. Was wonderful to watch all the comings and goings (from inside) although must admit did not sit in the garden too much while they were there. God do I sound like a wimp. It must be wonderful for you in the North so much more wildlife to see I would imagine. Very Happy

I think it's sad that bumble and ordinary bees are disappearing from the UK! To my mind a summer garden should be full of the sound of bees on the flowers and I was used to seeing 3 types of bumbles - a striped in black and yellowish and buff type, a small tawny brown one and the less common blackish ones with a red furry tail. In spring one of the delights was watching the first bees of the year discovering the crocuses but over the years less and less. As bees are a major pollinator they are a vital sign of a healthy ecosystem and the reverse must surely apply. For me one of the first things I noticed about Tenerife was that the bees were still doing well here!
