Hi all,
Im Simon, I landed on the Island on a saturday 4 months ago, started work on a spanish construction site on the Monday....been working like a dog ever since and my spanish is coming on fine. Two questions however...the freinds that brought me over here are from Belgium and we lead quite a spanish/Belgian life style...ive basically been here 4 months and not really met any English people living here...so im looking for a social life in my own native tongue.....and secondly does any one know of any one around the Las Americas , Fanabe area that does spanish lessons at a reasonable rate, say one hour a week so i can improve my grammer?
It would just be nice to meet some Ingles on the island...sounds strange but thats how its been for me since i have been here....help! |

Hi Simon and welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of English speaking friends on here.
I remember last week there was a posting from an English person teaching Spainish lessons, but cannot remember where her post was. Hopefully if she reads your message she may reply, but otherwise I am sure there are many others on here that may be able to help you.
There are also forum meet-ups each months, unfortunately I have not been able to make one yet, ie have missed two but that would be a good place to meet us all. Hubby and I are definitely going to the next one.
We have made some lovely Belgian friends here too. |

I know some dutch, but it's not something I could put on here
I also know someone in Las Americas that teaches Spanish too. PM me for her number, she's called Wendy and is English, but has been here years... Mind you, your Spanish will probably be better and you'll learn more at work than any lessons could teach you!
Just pick a bar... any bar... in PDLA/LC to meet other English people!!! _________________ Buy & Sell your stuff online FREE - www.canarianexchange.com - eBay for the Canaries |

No I don't speak Belgian either, puts us to shame really that Belgian, Spanish, German etc all speak either good or try speaking English. Must admit I am trying Spanish too. I did have a number for an Spanish teacher, who I emailed also will try and find it and put it on here for you.
If you look under the General Chit Chat heading there is a forum meet up thread. The Spetember one was last nigt but I am sure Karl who is brilliant at organising these things will soon put the one on for October. |

I thought the October one was going to be Jenny's birthday at a picnic ground in the mountains somewhere...? An afternoon thing so the kids can come along too. I find it a bit dificult getting out in the evenings, as I have to arrange it with my bloke ages in advance because the kids go to bed at 8pm and are a nighmare if we 'try' and keep them awake. _________________ Buy & Sell your stuff online FREE - www.canarianexchange.com - eBay for the Canaries |

Hi Simon and welcome to our forum.
Kirsty.....Would that be the Wendy who used to have a cafe in La Escalona? Speaks Spanish with an upper crust English accent? _________________ .

Yes Kirsty think you are right, forgot about that. If its in the mountains I may have a bit of a prob, as have a dreaful fear of heights and its just the driving there thats the killer (wimp I know) Will have a look at the thread and see if it is OK ie sheer drops on the way up etc, as would really love to meet everyone |

No. It's Wendy who comes to the footy with us sometimes, used to work in the Thomson offices a few years back, until she left and started teaching Spanish freelance. I think she goes out to people's houses and does it privately. Her bloke used to be PR in the Royal Oak II. _________________ Buy & Sell your stuff online FREE - www.canarianexchange.com - eBay for the Canaries |

Thanks every one for your responses! Thanks your response Wendy will Pm you soon....err...my Spanish well..if you can imagine where i have been working resembles something like an intercontinental Aufwiedersehen pet! Im working with Spanish and South Americans..all the dialects confuse me a little as they pronounce there words differently! AND i know the the words for hammer and, chisel, wheelbarrow, araina, cementos, and mucha trabajo! Putta madre comes up quite alot as well..think its a Spanish swear word Really considering ive only been here 4 mnths and didnt speak a word when i landed..im quite proud of my self!
As for going to any bar to meet english people..think i would have to frequent the same bar a few times to really meet people, and i havnt really had the time energy or money to be out cruising the bars here..theres way too many! AND Im choosy Easy to meet people on holiday i suppose if i made the effort...but would rather meet people who actually live here...much more constructive..are there any particular bars any one knows to put me in the right direction? |

I know what you mean Simon, it is difficult to find out where the local Brits drink or hang out. One of the problems of a holiday island. _________________ .

Hiya simba
A very big welcome from me too. you dont seem to be letting the spanish language bother you. as you say you get by. I know it helps if you know more but its a very difficult language to learn as the talk so fast. I think you are doing very well to hold a job down with the language barrier so dont sell yourself short. The people that live there on the forum are lovely so please go along to the forum meet and instantly you will have friends. Good luck anyway and i wish i could be living there too but not the right time for me, unfortunetly. Wish i could be there and i would be youre mate
Cheers
