Hi all
Just to let you all know that Fresh fm started to broadcast today on 102 fm this morning at 08:00 hrs.
Initially it will only be heard in parts of the South, but once the new transmitters arrive next week and the technicians twiddle their screwdrivers, it will be able to be heard all over Tenerife (right the way up to Santa Cruz along the TF1 and around to Puerto de la Cruz).
If you are around Costa del Silencio today, call in to see the presenters at work and have a drink in the Fresh fm Cafe. The new studio is just around the corner from the Shell Garage, next to the Postal Sorting Office (Avda. A. Tavio).
Hope to see you there!!
Cheers

Thats amazing that you posted this Stephen as we read about the radio station in the paper but at that time they were unable to give the band number, and we only talking about it today as we know it was today it started.
Thanks for that one, you must have read my mind. |

I would have stuck it on while I was in my car today, if I had known! I certainly hope it's going to be better than some of the other crap that goes out on the air over here...
Anyway, can you tell me, is it available in my neck of the woods? _________________ Buy & Sell your stuff online FREE - www.canarianexchange.com - eBay for the Canaries |

We had it on in the car and it sounds pretty good...and some decent normal music.
We went from golf del sur through to las americas.....only lost signal slightly at the very bottom of Golf Del Sur...but other than that, excellent all the way.
Also they are doing some deals on street buggies lol...fancy a go for 3 hours...normal price 50€ with fresh they said 25€ lol _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

I listened a bit on the way in this morning, but could only really get a signal from Adeje roundabout.
Will stick it on again on the way home! Sounded fine, what I heard... I will give you a full report once I've listened a bit more!
Was Bob Preston and Val Richardson on this morning... worked well together. _________________ Buy & Sell your stuff online FREE - www.canarianexchange.com - eBay for the Canaries |

Hi all - thanks for the positive responses, Fresh fm has got off to a great start and I am sure with the plans they have in place will only get better!
They have had a few hiccups, as expected (especially in Tenerife!) but seem to be dealing with them well and of course learning from them.
The extra transmitters were delayed on the mainland and will not now arrive until the next weekend, but when they are installed (which will be as soon as the Technicians can get their hands on them) you should be able to hear it all over the Island.
We drove from Los Cristianos up to Teide yesterday, lost it around Vilaflor on the way up, came down through Chio, picked it up along the main road but lost it in Guia and then picked it up from Los Menores again.
Once the transmitters are installed and the additional frequencies can be announced your car radio should automatically retune as you move from one area to another (assuming the radio is not too old and has the facility on it - RDS I think??)
Keep listening and passing your comments and I will let the Fresh fm team know what everyone says.
Thanks

My car radio is really old, so no RDS (yes, that is the right term) so if there are additional frequencies, it will be a bit of a pain in the preverbial, as I don't like to be fiddling with the radio while I'm driving. The only station I seem to get well in my car is Gold FM. _________________ Buy & Sell your stuff online FREE - www.canarianexchange.com - eBay for the Canaries |

Hi all, I'm new to the forum (& Tenerife, been here for just over two months now...) but make my living providing consuntancy services in the wireless data/broadcast systems /radio communications/telecommunications marketplaces.
All of my current work is currently in the UK & Ireland (not looking forward to my next comute back!) but I thought that the arrival of FM102 might be a useful opportunity to try out a few of my system design & measurement tools in a Tenerife environment and perhaps answer a few of the coverage area questions raised about the new transmitter.
I have placed a couple of illustrative coverage maps on my website which were computer generated using a digital model of the terrain.
http://www.clearpathcom.com/fm102/coveragesection.jpg
http://www.clearpathcom.com/fm102/fullcoverage.jpg
I have assumed a transmitter location on top the the hill just to the south of me here in Chayofa (which is crowded with masts) and made educated guesses at transmitter power and aerial type to generate the coverage areas (the darker areas are the hightest signal strength).
If anyone could let me have the actual location and technical info I will re-calculate a more accurate plot.
Although most of my engineering test equipment is still in the UK, I do have a computer controlled radio receiver here which collects signal strength information along with GPS derived position data which I will sling into the car when next convenient. This will allow the plotting of actual performance of 102FM along the roads and direct comparison against how well the "opposition" radio stations are doing at delivering coverage.
Although this is a bit of a "busmans holiday" for me, most of my current work is related to wireless data systems and this brings back memories of a time when I was responsible for the radio systems engineering for most of the (then) new BBC FM local radio stations in the late 70's and early 80's so what the heck!

Ken,
those coverage maps... is the darker bit the high strength? There's no map key on it I can see.
Secondly, It might be worth you doing a similar thing from La Escalona, as when I lived up there a lot of the stations had transmitters located on the house next door to where I lived... so it's obviously a good point. It'd be interesting to see exactly how good inrelation to other areas... as you said, the terrain out here is a major problem for most radio stations.
I live in Chio and although your coverage map says we should get 102, I find it drops out just after the Adeje roundabout... a terrain issue there, methinks.
I worked for the BBC too... but on the broadcasting side. This stuff interests me though... I'm just being nosey. _________________ Buy & Sell your stuff online FREE - www.canarianexchange.com - eBay for the Canaries |

The darker area is the highest signal strength area (there is a signal level colour key in the top left corner of the full island map). The map was purely illustrative of what can be done as it was based on my assumption that Fresh might be using the very obvious hilltop just to the south of me in Chayofa which is covered with masts.
Since then I have produced an FM band spectrum occupancy plot as measured in Chayofa with slightly suprising results.
http://www.clearpathcom.com/fm102/ChayofaSpectrum.jpg
It turns out that Fresh (and all of the other english language stations) are putting signals into Chayofa far lower in signal strength than the main Spanish stations (RNE, El Dia etc) who I am now sure are occupants of that hilltop.
So, either Fresh transmitter is somewhere else, or it has a transmitter power far less than that used by the other broadcasters. Either way, the assumptions I used doing the original coverage plot are clearly incorrect.
I am corresponding with Fresh, and I will post a new map if/when I obtain the actual transmitter information.
My time at the BBC was spent at Henry Wood House, then Brookmans Park & finally Warwick. Happy days, but I'm glad I left before the whole engineering side of the business was privatised and sold off. |
