Ther may be a few people growing it somewhere but no idea how to find them. The seeds are readily available online and could be grown here easily as could many other plants.

Actually, considering the island is ideal for cacti and succulents it is interesting to see that only the non-native prickly pear and cholla (opuntias) are the only non-endemic species widely distributed growing wild.

There are herbs here like Oroval (Canary Island Ginseng and a relative of Ashvaganda) that I would have thought would have been being sold in the health shops etc but don't appear to be. Also the Canary Island St John's Wort and Wormwood (Artemesia) are in this category.

If someone had the money to set it up and the land a good business could be set up growing plants and herbs that are not being cultivated commercially.

I mentioned the potential for business selling herbs because they do this with Aloe Vera here but have neglected all the others which seems strange.

I wrote a feature on Prickly Pear about a year ago for Tenerife News in which I pointed out it's uses as a medicine and a food and said there's even a book devoted to it!

As I see it all health problems are curable with wild plants but hardly anybody uses them apart from some of the older people here. I have a book - Canary Folk Medicine by José Jaén and he interviews many of the very elderly Canarians including a lady of 114. All of them use herbs as part of their key to long life.

I have also been thinking about the Sorrel that grows commonly all over the island. The Sheep's Sorrel of Europe and America is the main active herb in Essiac herbal cancer cure and the Canary Island herb has the same substances in it and could possibly be a substitute.
