Hello every one. I've been looking at the forum for a week or so, and have even read some of the posts, replies etc. It is very informative and what a friendly lot you seem.
My partner and I are coming to Tenerife in March. For better or worse we are selling up and getting out of the UK. She has an appartment in Callao Salvaje so we have somewhere to live. It's been her dream to live and work in Tenerife, that is why she bought the place there. It has also been appealing to me for some time now.
She is a nurse and I have worked in financial services for the past 14 years, lately as a mortgage broker. We will need to work as soon as possible as there are limited funds and the mortgage on the appartment and bill etc still need to be paid.
She already has an NIE number and residencia, I do not but will be trying to get it as soon as I can. She wants care/hospital work I will do anything, (within reason and legal). Don't speak Spanish apart from a few words but want to learn and will be taking lessons. Are we taking a big chance or what?? We are both 50 so this is not a short term holiday job situation but a serious change in life.
What do you think? Some advice or pointers would be very much appreciated. |

Hi Stewart and welcome to the forum.
I live in Callao as well so may see you soon. If you have until March before you move I would seriously consider some intensive Spanish lesson to give you a springboard.
When you say you will do anything there are always jobs in the local supermarket as the staff are forever changing. However I should think the wages are very low and you would need some basic Spanish to get by.
Do a search at the top of the page for jobs and have a good luck around the forum.

Thanks for the welcome, Karl.
Would be great to meet some people when we get to Callao.
Last time I was there I was sitting at a table outside Paddy's and next to me was my next door neighbours friend and a local business man from back home. My neighbours friend and wife now live in Callao too. I think he works in security for the clubs in Las Americas, she's a hairdresser. Small world!
Also thanks for the linik. I will look at this later. I'm doing this at work at the moment and shouldn't. Am listening to BBC learn Spanish tapes in the car on my way to work. Not ideal but better that nothing.
All the best! |

Hi Stewart and welcome to our forum, you say that you want work but you don't say what skills/experience you have. _________________ .

My skills and experiance revolve around financial services and mortgages. I did spend 6 months in an estate agents (as a mortgage adviser). I realise to do this kind of work I would probably need to be competant in Spanish so I guess this type of job is unlikely for the time being. Although I'm not looking for a career would be nice to get some regular work.
I like gardening and can paint and hammer and saw, but then again who can't. Would be willing and able to do these things, anything really. I know you don't get owt for nowt and just being a good bloke isn't enough.
I have worked behing the bar, a long time ago and I've driven taxi's, been a computer operator and a bookkeeper. |

Well, that was nice. Thanks for the replies and the encouragement. It's given me some hope knowing that there are still some good people around.
Learning Spanish is a challenge. Good luck with it, Maxine. It sure we will get the hang of it in a year or ten.
Will be reading the forum on a regular basis. Would like to contribute now and again. Thanks again. |

Hiya Welcome from me.....
With regards to looking for a job as you may have noticed there are lots of Estate Agents on the islands and a mortgage adviser / broker is a fundamental part .....you would have to study the Spanish system learn what paper work needed... and Spanish would be a big advantage... as you would be working with the local banks.... but its worth a try. |

Thanks 'Estate Girl'. I will try and contact some before I come over and see what is needed and if there is any chance. Do you work in an Estate Agents? Is that why you have that name? Or is that too obvious?
Cheers! |

I work in an Estate Agents hence the name.... not very imaginative I know!!
I have worked in a few different Estate Agents and I know from experience that if you send you CV they dont all contact you... so maybe a tinkle would be a good idea....actually being on the Island would be ideal and im sure you would get more response... good luck |

Hi Stewart and a belated welcome from me too.
As everybody has said if you are intending to work speaking Spanish really is essential. From our point of view we came out here to semi-retire and it is has worked for us, and I do not speak very good Spanish, yet. We work for ourselves.
I think moving out here really requiring work asap may be a little more difficult especially if you cannot speak Spanish. But it has worked for a lot of people, but bear in mind the wages are a lot less here than in England. Having a place already is obviously a great advantage and determination to make it work is a must.
Good luck and let us know how you are getting on. |

Hi Stewart and a belated welcome from me - I have been visiting my family over Christmas. That's one problem with living here - whenever you get holidays, you use them up visiting family and friends. I swear one day I will have a "proper" holiday, even if it is just a weekend in La Palma!!!
Anyway, I agree with the others, learning Spanish will help a lot and if you wanted to return to what you do best then, as EG says, you will be dealing with local banks so would need to be pretty fluent. |
