I have read some of the horror stories with telefonica and broadband. I am in tenerife for 3 months and am staying in an apartment in la caleta which has a phone socket. is it worth the hassle of asking them to give me broadband for 3 months or would they even consider it? are there any other options.
Also does anyone know the cheapest place or way to make international calls(particularly to UK and South Africa) in tenerife?

Hi there pentzy. Telefonica along with other internet providers insist on a contract of at least twelve months service.

Before we were connected to the telephone service we used telephone 'shops' in Puerto for really cheap international calls. I'm sure that somebody on here will be able to advise you of those and internet cafes in your area.

As has been said before, you'll need the landlord's permission to install a telephone as all unpaid bills will be charged to the property not to the person who used the phone. You could leave Tenerife owing his apartment a large bill, not saying you would. ADSL is for a minimum 1 year contract.

There are plenty of shops selling cheap phone cards that you can use for international calls. Many internet cafes have cheap tel systems.

Although the attached thread never came to a defenite conclusion this may be worth further investigation. If you can get internet access then you can make phone calls via skype or some similar application.

There's loads of places offering cheap international calls. The nearest one I can think of off the top of my head is in San Eugenio Alto near Spar and Hemingways bar (they have a sign by the pavement). Last week they were offering calls to the UK for about 5c a minute. Don't know if there's any catches though. No doubt there's plenty in downtown Las Americas and Los Cristianos.
