this may be an odd question but before moving out to tenerife or any other part of the canaries or spanish mainland, did anyone put together an action plan identifying key objectives and requirements?
we are looking at moving out there but there are so many things to think about. for instance i have seen that the enrollment for schools is just before easter, so that would have to be done prior to coming out. it would help in assessing how long it will be before we could feasibily move.
i have started off a list with items such as rented property, schools, work, doctors and the list is getting larger but at least with a general item list i can research each one individually until i have got a timeline and action plan together.
it may be by the time this is completed my kids have grown up and i am retired but we will get out there!!!!!
cheers.

Hi Keith,
it is a good idea to put together a list of things to sort out before you make the move especially as you have kids and their welfare is super important. I feel you can however plan too much. For instance, a lot of people want to have a job offer in a swanky office on 50k euros a year before they leave blighty. This is unlikely to happen! Jobs are difficult to get until you live here so a decent bit of contingency money is very important. You need to speak Spanish to get the better jobs too.
Your plan will of course depend on your situation, but property is easier to find (rented or buying) once you are here.
What I did was book a 4 week package holiday to get a feel for the area and get my NIE (go to search for explanation) and to find out the sort of wages you can expect and costs for rent and where to rent etc. I then came back and am just finishing selling everything and fly out to stay permanently next week.
I don't know how old your kids are but I think this is a great approach as its a one step at a time plan and also, there is only so much you can research from the UK over the net.
Everyone on here is very helpful but please use the search facility as a first point of reference for specific stuff.
I wish you and you family all the best and remember, anything you are not sure about, try the forum. _________________ Anyone know of any photography opportunities?? |

hi heymikey
thanks for the tips. i can make a list of the more obvious considerations but it is the things that a lay person wouldn't know that i am trying to get a handle on.
i am learning spanish at the moment and had i been a little braver would have typed it in spanish.
we come out every xmas and may do what you have done with a 4 week break closer to the time.
thanks again for the advice and i wish you good luck with the move and your future in tenerife.
cheers

1. We don't know what you consider obvious considerations. If you tell us what you've thought of then we could perhaps help with what we all think you've missed.
2. Good for you for learning Spanish. People don't realise how important that is. _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17
I will make this day a happy one for I alone can determine what kind of day it will be. |

That's a very open list if you don't mind me saying. How can we know what areas to advise about living if we don't know what you want, Some people can't live without crowds and brits, others want to live Spanish country style. _________________ .

Hi Rob
Thanks for the question.
i am trying to think of everything, although i am not that naive to think that there will be no unknown problems along the way.
We are looking at the south of the island in the Los Cristianos area, we would not like to live in the main tourist areas but would like to be within an area where there are some brits.
I am hoping that this list and the questions that it will provoke will help others as well as me to move to tenerife.
cheers

Palm Mar might suit you - its a residential area just around from Los Cris and I think there are a few brits there - not so sure about whether there is a bus service yet.
NIE - easy to sort when you are here
Visa - don't need one
Utilities - you may be able to rent including your utilities bills
Income tax - will be deducted if you are employed and have an NIE (takes a week to get one at the moment but this can change)
Bank Account - you can open one with your passport and may need NIE
Driving - you can use your UK licence for six months
Well that should get you started - can't help with the kids stuff as I don't have any! - A lot of this stuff you can sort out when you are here _________________ Anyone know of any photography opportunities?? |

Use the search facility for moving your things over. There is quite a bit of information. If you use a 'removal company' it will cost you a fortune. If you use a transport company, as I did, and get your things on a couple of pallets it will be a lot more cost effective.
Of course if you have furniture and large items you will have to look at using a container. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

Palm Mar is where we live, a lot of English and also a nice of mix of many Spanish and Belgians so not like an ex-pat community. No bus service yet, think it will be a long while yet, as officially they are not that many residents here. But to be honest anywhere you live here in Tenerife think transport is essential.
We used a shipper to bring our stuff over and it was quite reasonable. But of course they all vary |

There is also a lot of information on here regarding schools and advantages and disadvantages of English vs. Spanish school.
If you have a job with contract then medical care is covered by the social security. _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17

We have decided that the kids will go to a spainsh school, they will hopefully learn spanish before we come over so that they will intergrate a little easier.
the all important job, probably one of the main sticking points. _________________ desperate to get out to tenerife!!!! |

What do you do for a living in the UK.
Are you looking for thae same kind of work in Tenerife?
Are your skills easily transferrable?
Just interested to see how you are getting on with your action plan
Cheers
