Boy it is hot and not a cloud in the sky.

Yesterday on my brothers terrace (in the sun) his temperature monitor read 42 degrees.

That is hot.

I thought the same thing before I came over.

You will know believe me.

I can only describe it as being in an oven and breathing in hot air. Obviously a Calima in the heat of summer is going to be a lot worst than one in the Winter time.

Sorry but Calima is dust in suspension, this is when you can't see very far at all and have difficulty breathing. We've had a hot wind lately (called a sirrocco by some but not strictly true), this hot wind is often followed by a Calima. When we get the hot wind it tends to suck up moisture from the sea which in turn cuts down visibility over the sea but remains clear over the land.

Rob's right. In a real calima, you can't see to the end of the street let alone la gomera. If you can see strong blue sky, you're simply looking at a common-or-garden heatwave. In most calimas that i've seen, the wind has also picked up considerably, and every outdoor surface is covered with dust 2 minutes after you've wiped it.
