Here is a Stripeless or Mediterranean Treefrog (Hyla meridionalis), which I have at last found here at the Bodegas Cueva del Viento run by my friends Robert and Stefania in Cueva del Viento. The frogs breed in the water tanks there and sing a lot at night. I have heard them in another tank on a finca here in San Marcos too.

Yes, they are amazing - I love frogs and now know where both species that live on this island live.

I have seen the much larger Iberian Water frogs in Santa Cruz in Parque Sanabria Garcia and down south in a pool at Las Gangarras in Buzanada and I know they live in the ponds at Erjos too.

For female common toads its a lot worse - they are not only a lot bigger but in the mating season because there are far more males than females the males often pile on to the females and sometimes they drown under the weight and not being able to swim. This defeats the object totally and also adds to the shortage of females.

Here's a site all about it and I just wanted to add that mating time is equally dangerous for males if they have roads to cross to get to the ponds they use!
