i'm sorry if this is not in the correct place- but here goes.

i'm moving out in october and want to buy a laptop to bring with me, but what do i need to make sure it has/is to be certain it'll work over there? can anyone recommend a certain laptop? or am i better off buying one out in tenerife just to be sure it works and picks up the net?

please help as i'm a bit useless

Goodness you need to go on a crash course Kaybeam.

Any new laptop will have a built in modern which allows you to plug it into a router then into a telephone line and access the internet. You will need to organise your internet with a supplier...Telefonica. If you need internet access quickly then I suggest it is at the top of your list of things to do as it can take a while.

If you want to be able to sit on the terrace and use wireless internet then your laptop will need to have a wireless device built in. Just ask when to come to purchase. This will mean you need a wireless router. The router connects your laptop to the phone line. The router is plugged into the phone line and has an ariel that connects with your laptop without wires.

The good thing about wireless is you can take it anywhere there is a wireless hot spot and connect to the internet. For example at Subway in Cristianos if you buy a coffee they give you the password that connects with their wireless router so you can go on the internet all day long if you like.

What is your budget for a laptop. I will have a look for you. Will it be for home use ie. Internet, photos, word documents etc etc.

if you want wireless it does not HAVE to have it installed as you can get network cards for laptops cheap enough.

Any laptop from UK will be fine.....I have one from UK....I find it better cos it has a UK keyboard..lol

PC world are doing cheap ones for about 300 pound. They are cheaper in UK than here..

Agree with Stripps, I brought my laptop out with me, cheaper and I knew exactly what I was buying.

Where I live here in Palm Mar there is a problem with wireless (because of the mountain) there are a couple of places where it can be picked up, but most of us cannot pick it up indoors. So I am with Telefonica.

Who told you it was because of the mountain.

Even though its wireless the router still plugs into a phone line and runs down cables.

i'll be in torviscas so i should be able to pick wireless up somewhere right? (i'm wanting wireless rather than plug in).
karlb- all i nedd is summat basic, ie net, word, photos etc. owt else will be lost on me! ha ha. would love yer help.

Dont forget Kaybeam you will be able to pick up wireless networks but most of them will be secure. ie You need a password.

If you are lucky you may get an unsecured one. But I would be careful about logging onto unsecured networks although I have done it myself.

re price up to £350 tops. cheaper if poss. had been looking on dell website as they seem fairly cheap. thanks karl x

dont buy one from pc world! and dont buy a toshiba ive had nothing but problems with mine got it sent for repairs sent it back to me and still broken!!!! so rung them up mumerous times had to do this had to do that, then i was told oh well it wasnt fixed properly then il send for it to be picked up again! and now it could take up to 3 weeks!!!!!!! it has honestly put me off buying a laptop ever again

got mine from pc world...lol never had a real problem with it.

also i would suggest you pay for the extra cover .....PC worlds cover gives you cover abroad.....with lots of power cuts here and sand/dust it is well worth it.

I advised my neighbours to get it when we brought one over for them...they didnt and now need another one...the power cuts made a surge and blew hers up....

no as it was still from the original problem that happened during my year guarentty they havnt i dont think theyl dare charge the amount of phone calls weve had plus where they didnt fix it correctly before
