The Century Plant (Agave americana) is a common sight in Tenerife both growing wild and in gardens and parks. It has huge spiky leaves and tall flower spikes, which drop down thousands of little plantlets before the parent plant dies. It is called Century Plant because it is said to take 100 years to flower although this isn't true, especially in hot places like here! The Century Plant is an invasive weed and is very tough - on Tenerife it stood up well to the forest fires that ravaged the island. In astrology it is ruled by Mars the god of war and it lives up to this with its spiky and aggressive appearance and ways.

This one is used to make Tequila, not the flower as above but the plant heart. _________________ .
