Post subject: The comings and goings of my year in Tenerife |
|
|
As a follow on from Claire's post which was very inspiring I choose to write my own little piece of my experience regarding life in Tenerife and the definate NO NO's and its also a sort of thank you to all of you regulars that tried to help me a long the way thanks guys!
Too many people go out to Tenerife and get caught up in the holiday mode way of life and its a regrettable one because everything becomes manana manana and the booze gets mixed up with the partying and the spending on partying especially when its every night effects the whole experience and especially your pocket because for the lifestyle you need to expect to not get paid as well in the UK (its just not needed anyway but it is hard to get your UK way of being paid out your head at the very beginning)
I had the best time in Tenerife and I learnt the best lessons in life. by living there for a year. It's set me up for when I decide to move abroad again and although every country differs on a whole the basics never change:
research, reseach, research - its costs nothing and its so valuable
save!
get connected, obtain advice from those who already live there and dont take their advice as flippant comments (lesson number one I learnt!)
dont expect to get a job before your there, no ones going to employ someone they've never met - would you expect it from anywhere else in the world!?! if anything its worse, all the copious amounts of stages leading up possible jobs - interviews, tests, trials etc etc
dont fall into holiday mode from day one - its detrimental you dont, you have all the time in the world to live the life of riley but your savings wont last forever
expect down days when you miss friends and family -dont jump on a plane back asap stay strong and think why you left the UK in the first place. No place changes enough for it to be all roses when you return
I believe like you do Claire you had one of the best experiences of your life while you were there but above all its a very proud moment - least we gave it a go, I've told myself so many times now that I should never beat myself up by leaving at the time i felt it was the right thing to do so how can i regret
Don't get me wrong to those of you who are thinking of working/living abroad its not always how we've experienced it but its easy to get caught up in the fantastic lifestyle of sun sea and well you know but nothings for free and you have to work hard for the luxuries in life.
One thing that use to annoy me was how people were choosey with the jobs they wanted to do, its just not the way it works. IF YOU WANT THE NICE LIFESTYLE THEN YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR IT AND APPRECIATE ANYTHING THAT'S OFFERED TO YOU
I hold my hands up to taking the wrong turns and ending up at a dead end even after I was given good advice and support - to those that give advice I often choose to ignore it if I didn't like the sound of it and for that I apologise to those people (you know who you are) and above all I thank you for your patience, you really were there for me when I needed you and the worst thing I did was think I could lock myself away. If I were to reliterate anything previously said then it is to take the advice experienced people give you. They've taken the time to help you out, don't ignore it its pretty rude and offensive and above all can be highly frustrating. If you've asked the advice take note of any advice your given, its been given for a reason.
GOOD LUCK!

Good for you Ezzy.....
I am very proud of you for writing that....It took a lot of thought and time.
I agree with what you say about people not taking advise given. They only hear what they want to hear and if its not for them, then they dont listen.
You have learnt a lot and can now put that down as an experience. At leats you did it and in years to come that will be better than saying WHAT IF I tried to live abroad.
well done hunnie..
All my love

Spot on there Ezzy. How many people coming out to work will actually read and digest it though? As you yourself said, its all too easy to ignore the 'flippant' posts when they don't tell you what you want to hear.
TO ALL YOUNG PEOPLE THINKING OF LIVING/WORKING IN TENERIFE, READ AND TAKE NOTE OF EZZY'S POST !!

I aim to drum it into fellow 'young' newbies to the site from now on and as an experienced fellow Tenerifian that its not as easy as they assume its going to be.
As many of the younger generation filter over to Tenerife many never se it through, some lasting a mere few weeks. The majority work as PR's and though its a brilliant laugh, many go out with this thought that its going to be extremly plane sailing.
I guess from one aspect, I know everyone I met in Tenerife and left learnt so much about themselves its the one thing you take away from the experience and have in common.
Even with all my determination I know I'm not the first and won't be the last to try and 'drum' it into people how their way of thinking life is going to be in Tenerife simply wont be what they expect but I dare say I will give it a jolly good go - hehe _________________ facebook me - esmahan hassan |

I agree with with all the others too.
This is such a good post Ezzy, and I hope that what both you and Claire have advised will help others.
Although I agree people don't always take the advice and end up learning the hard way. _________________ Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional. |
