I'm going to attempt to post some pics of the varied flora to be found on Tenerife. I have no idea of the names, but I'm sure that The Bard can help out. (I'll keep adding as enlarge my 'Photobucket.'

I've attempted to re-size this pic on 'Photobucket', but I must be going wrong somewhere.
I select the picture; I click on edit: I click on the re-size option; I select 640x480 from the 'Preset sizes;' I then click on 'Apply.' Surely that should be it, or what am I missing?
PS. Purely by chance I managed to re-size it. As you can see from the 'edits' it took many efforts. _________________ Don't follow the 'MySpaceTenerife' link under my avatar because you will learn nothing about me.

It was good to meet you too Bard. You should have seen the look of surprise on your face when I said, "Hello Steve."
This beauty is so common here in Tenerife, but I'm sure that I will never grow tired of seeing 'Bird of Paradise' flowers

I believe this is called 'Barbados Pride.'

. . . . . . . and we can't leave out the famous 'Dragon Tree' at Icod, reputed to be one thousand years old.

I know this as the flamboyant or flame tree. I think that the 'Barbados Pride' is a shrub. _________________ .

I agree with Rob, because I know it as the Flame Tree and also as the Poinciana. It comes from Madagascar.
Pride of Barbados is very similar though and grown here and I will see if I have a photo in my collection but not now because its past my bedtime! _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |

Well done gentlemen! These are really impressive pictures. Such beautiful plants.
They seem to resemble some of the plants that I have seen in South Africa, with the exception of the "Dragon Tree". When I return, I will take a few snapshots for you... |

This is the Pride of Barbados aka Dwarf Poinciana, Peacock Flower, Flower Fence, Red Bird of Paradise, Mexican Bird of Paradise and in Latin it is Poinciana pulcherrima or Caesalpinia pulcherrima.
The other tree that Seagull photographed besides being known as Flame Tree and Poinciana is the Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) or the Flamboyant Tree. _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |

Thanks for that Bard.
We are so lucky here on the island with such a variety of flora. _________________ Don't follow the 'MySpaceTenerife' link under my avatar because you will learn nothing about me.

Hi,
Yes i know the tree with the red flowers as the Flamboyant.
We have 2 lovely ones in the garden but they dont flower long enough and the rest of the time they drop their leaves and stick like branches and make a real mess. |

We took some visitors in to Teide's crater a couple of weeks ago. I've never seen so much flora there in this usually bare moon landscape. May is obviously a good time to visit the area.

I have two of those growing in pots on my balcony, which brings me to the mystery if why don't hardly any people or parks and gardens here grow this majestic plant? The seeds are readily available from many shops but I have hardly seen any plants of Red Viper's Bugloss/Tajinaste Rojo (Echium wildpretii) anywhere apart from Teide and Vilaflor? They had ONE in Santiago del Teide last year but considering that each spike produces thousands of seeds you would think the plant would be plentiful and not among the rare and protected species!
White Viper's Bugloss/Tajinaste blanco (E. simplex) is practically vanished from the wild - it grows somewhere in the Anaga range - but is grown more often in parks and on flower borders along roads but again it's a mystery - why are these spectacular and very rare plants not frequently cultivated? Seeing as both are endemic wild flowers I would have thought they could be easily increased in the wild too! Am I the only person on the island that wonders about such stuff?
Someone responsible for public gardens and roadside borders and roundabouts has had them planted here and there eg I have seen the plant in borders in Los Realejos, Tacoronte, El Tanque and in Parque del Drago so it could be done! _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |
