Hi Hi I am thinking when I come to Tenerife of starting uo a retail shop selling diving equipment including underwater housings etc, I am a diver and also have alot of experience in customer service, office work and business, I am coming to live in Tenerife in January 08 and am doing a spanish course now, am hoping to find office work to tide me over, but really want to work in a diving related field. Are there any shops like this in Tenerife and do you think it would cost much to set up, it does not have to be a big shop to start off with?

Hi Louisa, diving is popular here and there are loads of padi etc companies offering dive training courses, try dives etc. Some of these also sell equipment and there are shops that sell the gear. How much would you need to start? How long is a piece of string? How big would your shop need to be? How much money stock will you need to carry? what's the delivery time? Will your suppliers give you any credit? (extremely unlikely unless you have previous trade with them). What's your marketing budget going to be? How much is advertising space in Tenerife?

Forgive me if I'm wrong but it seems as though you have an idea but no real knowledge of setting up a business. Unless you have pots of money to invest then you're taking on a monumental task. Far better to live and work here for a year or two and sus out the lie of the land.

The major supplier of dive equipment in the south of Tenerife is Casco in Adeje.....It sells to dive centers or people with a Dive masters cert or higher.

You can also get some equipment in Decathlon.....but this a retail outlet.

There is a great call for dive equipment because as Rob says theres loads or divers here....My hubby is a Dive Master himself...

It would be rather difficult to break into the field of selling to dive centers as they tend to stick with what they know.

If you wanted to work in the diving field...AND you have a cert of DM or higher, then you could work with dive centers here...BUT firstly it would be wise to dive quite a bit here, to get to know the dive sites first...

Dive centers are mre likely to hire someone with local site knowledge.
