Post subject: 1 of those questions thats prob been asked a million times!! |

Hi ive tried doing a search but none of my searches are proving to come up with any of the key words I type
Me and my partner are hoping to move to Playa In May 2007. We are currently studying spanish we've done 20 lessons so far and surprisingly were enjoying it. Anyway we've got no ties this end and by next May I will be 21 and Paul will be 26 (haha i'll always be younger). We'll have savings of around £8000.00 so im saying thats roughly 12000 euros?
Unfortunately I dont have any bar, waitressing, shop asssitant experience, as all Ive ever done is worked as legal secretary and sold Avon. Ive done research about selling Avon but ive been told that its very limited. Paul is a post man here and well I didnt even bother doing too much research on the postal system if you know what I mean. Ive been told I could be an au pair/nanny but i dont have qualifications is this true?
Would someone take on a person if they had no experience behind a bar?, i cant see them hiring me but i was thinking of doing say 3-6 months on say the weekends (as its the busiest time and it'll get me use to it)
Theres so many questions I could ask but there all so vague, so i know its going to be one of those experiences where we'll just learn as we go a long.
One thing i would like to ask though is when renting a property as were planning on staying for good if luck is on our side - is living in a block of apartments a risky thing to do i.e. is crime high? burgulary in playa? I suppose we have the money for somewhere more secure but 12000 euros wont last all that long would it? Also is water and gas included in these rental prices?
Sorry for the huge ramble but i have asked people in the past before and most the time they dont even live out there themselves and well this forum seems full of so much information but i cant seem to use the search right for some reason. I'll keep trying though.
** hugs **

Hi Ezzy,
It very understandable that you have lots of questions just remember there is no such thing as a silly question.... you ask away!
With regards to au pair or nanny job with no experience I’m not a mother (yet) but I think if I was I would want somebody qualified...
Bar work taking into account your picture I would say you wouldn’t have a problem getting bar work as your a pretty girl, but I guess some bar work would give you a head start....couldn’t you get a part time bar job back home as your not moving out here till next year gives you the time.
Rentals; Americas is always going to be more expensive then other areas further out...like Costa del Silencio...maybe you could get a nice one in Los Cristianos.... but remember that you have to pay up front 1 month rent, 1 month deposit, and with most places a month finders fee....
I live in Costa del Silencio area have done for year and I have been broken into 3 times in 14 years.... not a nice experience but all I can say is if they want to get in they will....no matter where you live you can have to be careful and try and pick a secure apartment. |

Right Ezzy, here goes, I'll try and answer as much as I can for you and if I miss anything out, either Stripps will answer or we've not remembered it!
There are not only bars/restaurants/shops here in which to work. If you have been a legal secretary then why not look for secretarial/admin work here? There are hundreds of estate agents and other companies who employ secretaries, even if your Spanish is still not completely fluent (although ovbviosuly it will help if you are). Legal-wise there are also many gestorías or legal advice offices and if your Spanish is up to scratch then they may consider you too. Or do you not enjoy office work? You could look after kids here if you wanted - it's uyp to the mother if she requires you to have qualifications/experience.
Unless you want to spend that money really quickly then you are going to have to live in an apartment block. The only other choice is a villa/house which are very expensive. There is crime here, like everywhere else. I don't think it's any worse than in UK. So don't leave you cash about the apartment )especially after having posted on here how much you have )
Hope I've not missed anything. |

Thanks for your replies estate girl and jenny its really kidn of you to take the time to help answer those questions you read everyday. Hope i havent made your day to dull je je je.
I thought that as soon as i asked about being a nanny, i know how id feel if i had children.
I dont enjoy office work here but i suppose that could be due to the people i work for.
Personally I would love to work in a bar for say 6 months, just to get a taste of being among people on holiday and not stuck in an office when people moan at you. Dont think im being naive in saying the above I know bar work is very low paid and once my spanish is fluent office work would be more paid one would assume but because i left school and went straight into 3 jobs i wish i had just gone a little wild je je je.
I did ask about crime purely because everyone that goes to a holiday resort has money of some sort and i thought this might attract certain people just like anywhere else.
Estate Girl if i moved a bit further out from Playa to say where you are in costa del silencio or an apartment in los cristianos and drove into playa if i had a job would it work out cheaper in the long run do you think?
i think i'll go on your advice jenny about living in an apartment, it would work out a lot more cheaper and even we dont find jobs straight away (which is possible!) at least we can make the money last a little longer.
Mucho gracias! _________________ facebook me - esmahan hassan |

Ezzy if you lived outside of LA and cristianos the rents are very chep in comparison. You will get a 1 bed apartment for about 450€ a month, this will normally be bills included. But then you have the travel aspect of getting to work. The buses are good and you can buy cars so it may not be so bad.
For the postman side of things..............technically they exist here..........we have a perosn that gets the post given to them and they deliver it as and when they either feel like it or have eniugh to make it worth while. You may not get post for ages if at all lol.
If you do go for office work then the hours will be a lot better than bar work and tourist trade but you may enjoy both out here.
errrmmmmm
I think thats all i can think of at the moment but seriously if you have any other questions about anything, then feel free to ask. someone will surely be ale to help you. _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Hi ezzy me and my girlfriend are in exactly the same situation as you are, we're hoping to move to Cristianos but if that proves too expensive then it will be surrounding areas we'll be looking at. We're not moving out til a bit later than you Sept/Oct 2007. My girlfriend also works in an office and we're both gonna start learning spanish but thats on hold cos I've gotta go to Iraq in Sept. We're taking a similar amount of cash with us too so could be worthwhile staying in contact to see how we all cope _________________ Moving to Los Cristianos next Sept time. |

Hi Ezzy,
Personally I think you'll be better off living in Los Cristianos or PDLA. the money you'll save on rent by going outside the main areas will soon be spent on fares etc. If you save 100 Euros a month on rent that's 12 Euros each a week for bus/taxi fares etc. Also if you're thinking of bar work you'll be finishing late when there are no buses running which means a taxi. Bang goes any saving. You're coming out with far more money than most so if you're prepared to work you'll have no problem. When learning your Spanish I'd advise not sticking to course work as that can take years. Buy extra material and study hard. It's well worth getting a private tutor as then you'll move ahead far quicker.
Rents here usually include water/electric or at least an allowance. _________________ .

jonesie that sounds like a good idea! ) sounds like your situation is similiar to us like you said! you planning on staying for good in tenerife or just taking some time out?
ezzy
rob thanks for the info, i can see your point and to be honest (and dont think im being judgemental for saying this) but getting taxis each night isnt my idea of good fun, id much rather just be able to get home within walking distance or jump on a bike or something. i suppose we could get a car but to begin with we want to ease into things gradually...you good sound advice and once again thanks |

No we're staying for good, had enough of the UK. We're both just tying up all the loose ends now here, then I'm away with the T.A and then we're having 12 months saving ready to start our life out there. We had the same plans on living out in the cheaper areas but after Robs advice think it probably will be more beneficial to live in town.
We're flying out on friday for a week partly for a holiday and just to start looking around and getting some sort of plan together. _________________ Moving to Los Cristianos next Sept time. |

| Can I just add that not ALL jobs are in Las Americas or Los Cristianos, although if you don't speak much Spanish then that is where the large majority of British companies are based. |

Yes Jen, my comment was addressed to Ezzy and partner bearing in mind their circumstances. If you've got a job lined up with Telefonica Jonesie then there's no need for you to live in town. _________________ .

Its not 100% yet with Telefonica, the only reason they're considering me is because I currently work for BT and I think they're partners?? They only normally recruit internally (or so I'm told) and you need to be a spanish speaker. If I'm not sorted with them before I move out then thats when I'll probably have to live in town because its where the two British contracting companies (for telefonica) are based. Just keeping my fingers crossed I can get with Telefonica _________________ Moving to Los Cristianos next Sept time. |
