but i think its such a shame people cant at least try to talk spanish. they have all these questions and want to live in Tenerife as a brit and want all these answers, want jobs, accomodation...moving abroad is going to be hard enough, its not going to be put on a plate all nicely presented and easy as pie to eat...ok sorry to those of you that arent in the above category but I think people could at least try, you'd gain a lot more respect for trying than not at all, you never know it might actually make life easier out there if you tried.

I feel mean for saying the above but its true! Smile

I don’t think you should feel mean at all......I know people that have lived here for over 20 years that still to this day can not hold a conversation in Spanish yet they have businesses here and have to work with Spanish/Canarian! Everyday.....so they employ someone who can speak the language! or think that everybody should speak English!!

You do gain much more respect from the locals i,e Canarians or mainlanders if you at least try and speak the language.

I have found that even if you try they help you out if its wrong...............not in a nasty way but more to help you in the future.

When i first moved here i only knew pleasentries but now i am a lot better and my children can now have a 'proper' coversation in spanish. There are a few spanish where we live, one of which is a teacher of english, and these people only speak spanish to my children after they asked them to do so.

I do however know peole who who have moved h ere and only want english speaking friends, english schools for children and everything in englsh................this is not good, why bother to live her???????

you know what? you're absolutely right. this is exactly the approach that i adopted during my first visit to the island last year. i met some really nice local people (canarians); got invited to two bbq's; got free drinks in a some of the restaurants. some of people that i met i regularly speak with in spanish on msn.... Very Happy

Best way I think is to move to a Spanish speaking area like I have just done!

Exactly! I live in Chio and before that, La Escalona. I have learnt more Spanish just chatting with the neighbours than I ever would of in LC/PDLA.

When folks immigate to the UK, they get slagged off if they don't learn the lingo. People kick up a god awful fuss about how leaflets are translated into several languages at the DSS, however they come here and do EXACTLY the same thing to the Canarians... a bit hypocritical, methinks.

If you move abroad, learn the lingo. It's polite! I lived in Greece for 3.5 years before I came here and I can speak greek too

I couldn't agree more. I don't live in a very Spanish area but I hope to when we sell our house on the mainland. But I suppose I cheated and got a Spanish boyfriend (who is now my hubby). It's definitely the easiest way to learn! You've got to make the effort to mix with the Spanish, which, there being so many Brits about, I realise is hard, but keep trying, it's worth all the effort in the end.

Aye, but unfortunately greek's not as useful as Spanish, as they only speak it in Greece!... and I don't get a chance to use it anymore Embarassed

so I don't think that'll last for long...

Like Welsh. I was sent to a Welsh primary school and took GCSE Language and Literature but since then I have had little practice and although I can still understand most of it, the words just don't come out anymore!
