Hope this is okay for this section of the site........
My husband and I are looking to move out to Tenerife (very very early planning stages) we have 3 children 17, 8 and 9.
My husband is in electronics, maintains and repairs games systems - Xbox, PS2........, he also does market work selling household electrical items such as irons, kettles etc. I myself work as a teaching assistant in our local primary school with my main responsibilities for ICT (Information Communication & Technology) to you & I that means teaching the children how to use the computers
Now here comes the hard part, based on what I have told you, what, if any, does anyone think our chances are of being able to find employment for me and for my husband to stay self employed.......
Answers on a postcard please |

Hi Kath
To be honest it sounds like you have very good chances of getting and maintaining work. Has your hubby considered setting himself up as a business? Also, if he intends to continue market work, they are all over the place so he shouldnt have a problem there (I dont know the laws regarding having a stall, but can find out for you)
The biggest mistake that people make is thinking they can get work as soon as they get here, doing exactkly what they want to which often doesnt happen. I would save up as much cash as possible to fall back on should things not tke off as quickly as you want.
You line of work might be better than you think. There is a huge shortage of teachers over here. Do either of you speak any Spanish? If not, then I would seriously suggest learning as early as poss, if you wanted to do teaching here it would be invaluable.
What part of the Island are you thinking of moving to?
Any more questions,, feel free to ask. |

Thanks for your quick reply.
We are initially looking at somewhere between Las Galletas and Fanabe, maybe, as we know the area fairly well..... on our visits to Tenerife we have been based at Playa Paraiso.
Hubby is able to speak German & some Spanish, my vocabularly stretches to Hola We have said that we would learn the language if it became 100% that we are moving.........the children, well although not fluent are a damn sight better than me.........lol.
Any info you are able to get on the market situation would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Kath!
Regarding your employment a TA colleague of mine moved to Tenerife last Sept and found work quite quickly in a private English school near Los Cristianos. She did take with her a pile of excellent references from all the teachers she'd worked with at our school and I think that impressed her new employer.
Good luck! |

Hi Linda
Thanks for that info, will make sure I do that when we eventualy move
I'm not sure if the NVQ's we get here in England are recognised anywhere else, if they are that will be a plus |
