Post Post subject: Driving Reply with quote

Cool Hey folks! I'm coming to tenerife on holiday soon and was thinking of hiring a car. Bit nervous about driving though - i mean not generally, but i havent driven abroad before. Wondered if anyone can give me any tips? Are the roads pretty hectic? Will want to hire a car at the airport (south), so my first trip will be from there to Puerto de la Cruz where i've booked an apartment in Pez Azul

Hi Ruth, some of the drivers can be a bit careless. Stay calm and concentrate you should have no problems.

I remember the one thing I noticed when I started driving over here is the way they fly out of the slip roads to get on the motorway (TF1). In England most people try to move over to let other cars out, over here the cars on the slip road give way. So they may end up coming to a stand still at the end of the slip road.

Good luck.

Hi Ruth.

There is one habit the drivers have here that always confused me at first. When the traffic is slowing up or stopping they use the left indicator to let the car behind know. I remember being in the outside lane of the motorway and the car in front indicating left. I was thinking to myself " How the hell is he going to turn left"?

As Karl says if you take it steady you will be fine.

Hi Ruth, not long been back from tenerife myself, we also hired transport, at first was abit strange but once you get used to the signs and the different town it seemed easier. we travelled the whole island as we are planning the big plunge to move over. you will be fine the roads wasnt too bad just in the busier resorts we tended to go round in circles for a few hour ha ha

Hi Ruth3, the thing i keep saying to my self when I drive on a different side of the road is "the driver is always in the middle of the road" and I keep repeating this when I come to round abouts or confusing junctions. The only time it didn't work was when we drove up to England in our Spainish car!!

Hi Ruth,

If you are travelling around Los Cristianos I have to mention the new roundabout it should be renamed the loony tunes race track!! All that I can advise you to do is keep going round signalling very clearly and wait until you feel it is safe to leave - of course this might not be the turning you want to leave by but you will just be glad to get off!! The department of trafic really do need to put out some instruction on how to use a multilane road system, because no Canarian seems to have a clue
they work on the theory that go as fast as you can, disregard all others and thank god for a patron saint because that can be the only thing that keeps them from instant death. Still I do think that veerry slowly they are beginning to get the idea, you can sometimes get onto the roundabout from the Guaza entrance (old road, to those in the know)
Road Rage Phew
