If you are in Puerto I highly recommend the Botanic Gardens which for 3 Euros (I think it was) is fantastic value as an ornamental park with an amazing collection of exotic trees and plants. There's a restaurant I have eaten at opposite the entrance.

From Puerto I recommend you go and see the Parque del Drago with the amazing Drago Milenario (thousand year-old Dragon Tree) in Icod del los Vinos too and while you are there have a look at the incredible silver cross in the church and the plaza with a huge banyan tree. They are all in the same area of the town and within walking distance of the bus station. Another must-see is Mt. Teide. You can get the 354 bus to Icod from Puerto and it's regular all day and for Teide there is 1 at 9.15 the number 348, which returns from the mountain at 4pm giving you several hours there!

Hey, a mate and I are heading to Peurto de la Cruz in June. We're staying in La Carabela, EL BOTANICO, - Puerto De La Cruz (38400).

Can anyone tell us how close this is to the centre of activities, particularly a street called Generalississimo?

Plus how far are we away from the nearest beach?

It's very near the town centre and the beaches are right next to the town's shopping streets. Minutes on the bus or probably not more than 15-20 minutes walk. There's plenty of restaurants, bars and shops up by where you are too.

Can you tell me what Generalississimo is like? Is it the main street in Peurto?

It is one of the main streets down to the sea front.

Hi,

my husband and I are going to Puerto for 7 nights in two weeks time and we are wondering about how much money we should take with us. We will be staying in Apartments Casablanca (C/ Calzada de Martianez). We don't have any food supplied by the hotel and are planning to buy some groceries for breakfasts and light lunches. We would like to eat out to experience local cousine. We would also like to visit Bananera El Guanche, Jardin Botanico, Loro Parque, Lago Martinez and if time permits, El Teide.

Could you please advise me on how much we should allocate for food and do you know how much admissions to these venues above could cost? (I know about the botanical gardens, many thanks!)

Also - do you know whether they are any supermarkets nearby?

Many thanks for your kind help!

Vera

Loro Park is 30€ per adult.

For food shopping no-one can estimate what you might spend. I would allocate roughly the same as you would spend at home. It is likely to be cheaper as long as you find a reasonable supermarket.

Eating out prices vary greatly. It all depends on what sort of places you are going to dine at.

Thanks Jenny.

Loro Park is quite expensive, I thought it would be less than that. We'll definitely take rather more than less with us.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Bananera El Guanche is 9€ entrance I think but I enjoyed the place.

There's a cheap restaurant that locals use and so do I by the bus station called Cafeteria Mazaroco, which you can't miss and they do Canarian and British food. Veggie pizza and 2 Dorada beers costs 7.20.

Places down the seafront are more expensive so watch out!

Teide you can do cheaply with a Bono. I think its around 2.50 each way and the 348 bus goes at 9.15 and back at 4 pm, which gives you loads of time on Teide at the tourist centre or the cable car centre. The excursions charge a lot more and give you little time there. Mueller Travel for example give you a 2 hours hard sell of blankets and pillows and they give you ONLY 15 minutes on Teide for 9€!

Thanks Bardofely,

will definitely try the cafeteria you have recommended. I've read a lot about local food and I can't wait to try it! Smile

Do you think cycling to Teide would be too far? What is the state of the roads there? We are both very fit and would like to cycle around a bit while we are there (but Teide might have to be done via a bus Very Happy) Also: are the pyramids in Guimar worth seeing and again, would it be too far for cycling (we usually cycle 30-40km a day).

Many thanks for your help!

Cycling up Teide Shocked I hope that you are of 'tour de france' standard, it is some thing like 7,000 ft of altitude to the national park with no flat bits to give a respite. Once there I would never cycle, narrow roads with buses hurtling past each way. Check out the pyramids on here (use the search) you can see some FOC and much nearer.

I would think Teide is too high and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are experienced at cycling in this sort of terrain which includes cloud forest, steep climbs and hot dry volcanic areas. Güímar might be possible - depends where you are starting from? From Puerto I don't know how you'd do it! Buses are a lot easier I would think. Buses to Güímar go on a fairly regular basis from Santa Cruz and back and you bus it to there from Puerto all day easily enough. The bus goes through Candelaria so you might want to stop there too and see the basilica and Black Madonna and the 9 Guanche menceys on the sea wall.
I am very glad to hear that you are very fit - it's very important if you want to explore some parts of the island, which as well as getting very hot can be very steep and rocky!
It's another 9.75 to go in the Ethnographic Park where the pyramids are but you get a film show for that and access to a museum with displays of ceramics, pyramids around the world, Heyerdahl's voyages etc. The restaurant is reasonably priced. Get off the bus on the main road into Güímar and look for sign s to the Pirámides de Güímar and the roads up to the park are on the Teide side of the road as opposed to the coastal one. There is even a Bar Pyramid on the main road and if you find that you are not far off!
