Hello ateam, and a warm welcome to the forum.
I suppose that you have already bought your tickets for the Tenerife South (TFS) airport. If you are able to change them and can fly into Tenerife Norte Los Rodeas (TFN) you will find it much simpler to travel to Puerto. (It takes about half an hour to get into Puerto on the bus.) There are BA scheduled flights from Gatwick on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the year. I believe that Monarch are doing some chartered flights from Luton(?) to the north airport during the summer months.
I'm unable to advise the cost of taxis from the south airport.
If you intend to hire a car for the duration of your stay in Puerto, that could work out as a good option. Leaving the airport get your navigator to look out for signs TF1 to Santa Cruz. On approaching the capital look out for TF5 to Puerto de la Cruz and you will be directed to the right hand lane off of the Santa Cruz road.
Be warned, because Puerto enjoys much pedestrianisation, car parking spaces in the town are at a premimium.

We choose to travel by bus as they are cheap and reliable. There are four buses per day from the south airport direct to Puerto de la Cruz. You can catch the number 340 immediately outside the Arrivals Terminal. They leave the airport at: 09 45; 14 00; 20 00 & 23 30. The return journeys from Puerto leave the bus station at: 07 10; 12 00; 17 20 & 21 45. (All buses going into the airport stop at the Departures Terminal.)
If your flight times do not tie up with these times there is a bus that goes into Santa Cruz bus station, and other buses can be caught from there into Puerto. The number 341 leaves from the same bus stop as the 340 starting at 06 50, and leaves at hourly intervals up to and including 08 50. The next 341 leaves at 09 30, again at hourly intervals up to and including 11 30. The next 341 leaves at 12 10, again at hourly intervals up to and including 14 10. The next 341 leaves at 14 50, again at hourly intervals up to and including 16 50. The next 341 leaves at 17 30, again at hourly intervals up to and including 19 30. The next 341 leaves at 20 10, again at hourly intervals up to and including 22 10. There are two more 341s leaving at 22 50 and 01 30.

The airport buses from the south stop at the bus station in Santa Cruz and the bus stops for a Puerto connection are close by. At Santa Cruz there is a choice of three buses into Puerto. They are: 101; 102 & 103.
The 102 is a direct express bus and stops only in Puerto. (There are exceptions to this rule and I will post a (1) alongside the bus times affected). From Santa it leaves at: 06 00(1); 06 20(1); 06 40(1); 07 10(1) and then every half hour (ie. at ten past and twenty to each hour) up to and including 21 10. The next bus is at 21 30 and runs every half hour until 22 00. The next buses leave at 22 15(1); 23 30(1); 00 15(1); 02 00(1) & 04 30(1).
The 103 uses the same route as the 102, but does make stops along the way.
The 101 calls into many villages on its route into Puerto.
If you manage to catch the 340 direct from the south airport into Puerto, the journey should take around eighty-five minutes. By using a TITSA Bono-bus ticket, the fare is a little over five euros each. The fares using other buses are slightly cheaper.
By using buses via Santa Cruz the journey should take from one hundred and five minutes up to one hundred and fifty minutes, plus waiting time at Santa Cruz. _________________ Don't follow the 'MySpaceTenerife' link under my avatar because you will learn nothing about me.

WOW! Thats a pretty comprehensive reply! Just to give you a bit more background information. My friend and I are on a budget holiday. We are staying a month in Tenerife, flying from Dublin to Tenerife via Aer Lingus arriving at 18:20. After a flight I'm not sure if I'm too keen on a 1hr 40min wait on for a bus and then a further 85min journey.
What are the possibilities of renting a car simply for the journey from the Airport to Peurto and being able to leave it at some depot in the town? I know renting cars in Gran Canaria was very cheap and am wondering is it the same story in Tenerife.
Also can anyone speculate as to the likely cost of a taxi, looking at the map, I'd say it would be quite expensive. (I think this is going to be too expensive)
My preference would be to rent the smallest car and drive up. A car in Gran Canaria cost about €20 a day so that wouldn't be too far outta budget |

You say that you arrive at 18 20. It is not unusual for planes arriving into the busy south airport to be late. It will probably take at least half an hour for you to go through customs and to retrieve your luggage. Given those circumstances the wait for the bus could be under an hour.
The journey from the terminal to the bus depot in Puerto should take eighty five minutes. Given no hold-ups and the 'right' driver, it would not surprise me for at least twenty minutes to be knocked off that schedule.
I'm unable to advise about a day's car rental. The only time I drove from the airport to Puerto was during a holiday, and I had pre-booked the car for the durtation of our trip. _________________ Don't follow the 'MySpaceTenerife' link under my avatar because you will learn nothing about me.
