From what I heard (about the south of Tenerife), it's slightly cooler, especially in winter.

The Canaries have been called Europe's Hawaii (mostly by Americans), does this claim stand up?

I have never been to Hawaii so cant make a direct comment......but yes the winter is cooler....we get snow on the mountain, which from wher i live looks absoluetly fantastic. We take the children up there to play in the snow then come back down and go to the beach.

The weather is nice for my liking all year round. This is why i moved here.

I have a question for you now........why all the concern about the weather?????? there must be other reasons you would want to live here????????

winter just gone it snowed on 3rd Jan and then had a big down pour on the 6th too......we go up the mountain just above Vilaflor.....although sometimes it is so bad that the roads are closed so we cant get to the BBQ area. But when you can it is lovely ..like a winter wonderland.

I know it never fails to amaze me that you are looking at Teide completely white and covered in snow and here we are looking at it in the sun and heat. I have not yet been brave enough to up to Teide as I have a terrible thing about heights (wimp I know) and we got so far and I was pulling my hair out with the sheer drops at the side of the road, so we had to turn back. Dave says he should get me any eye mask so I cannot see a thing!

They have a snow-capped mountain and volcanic black sand beaches in Hawaii too...
It's a little far though (hah! a little!), and being part of the US, more than a little difficult to obtain a work visa for UK residents...

The Canary Islands, though, being part of Spain, are much more viable for anyone from the UK wanting to live there... and have arguably better weather than Hawaii (less year-round heat).

Check out this if you don't believe me - look at 'discomfort from heat and humidity':
Average conditions in Las Palmas (north Gran Canaria - representative of north Tenerife also):
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT004740

Average conditions in Honolulu, Hawaii:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT004790

Of course, both are mountaneous regions with cooler weather at high altitudes...

As for your question strip... well I'd like to live in Tenerife because of the slower lifestyle (from what I've heard), the beaches, to live in a different culture, and to get experience in another language i.e. Spanish (I was crap at foreign languages at school, I admit that!)

It also has less extreme heat in summer than mainland Spain and the Mediterranean, which is highly preferable for me - yet is still very warm. My parents considered emigrating to the Malaga region once, so they visited in July and found it unbearable, and decided it was a no-no!

I'm sick of England and want a new life! I also have little social life here at the moment, would like to have some distance from my family (although it's still not too far from the UK), and a change of lifestyle. I want to get into more outdoor pursuits!

I also visited Tenerife twice (in winter on holiday) and loved it! The weather, the landscape, the scenery, the culture, and it's so cheap eating out. There is also the green north for when I miss England's verdant meadows... Razz

Hi Mequa

Looks like your mind is set to move here, it really is lovely. Have noticed the seasons now that we have been here a while and enjoyed that too. Would you have to work out here as although you mention that it is cheaper here if you are comparing to England, but if you are working the wages are a lot lower. If you don't need to work then fine, me and my hubby are semi retired and just do a few hours a day and that suits us. We have met some really lovely people and to be honest did not want really do live in a totally English area so we have many English and Spanish friends. Have met people here who have moved here live in very English communities, shop in Iceland and don't try to or speak any Spanish, but they love it too so it is not for me to say what is right or wrong. But when in Rome ............. Very Happy
